In just one month's time, they collected 2,872 phones and raised $4266.90 and boosted attendance.

How did they do it?

They promoted their collection via their website and newsletter and they gave away free admission for every five phones brought in!

Great job Fossil Rim!

April 2010
Dear Conservation Partners:

Good news-its spring, Earth Day is near and our program is growing. In fact, we have just signed a lease on a larger space just down the street and will be moving on May 1. The move won't affect you but it does let you know that our quantities are growing which is good for everyone and the environment.

More good news-we are increasing the prices we pay you for the phones you collect. We hope to continue this as the recession slowly fades.

Thanks to all those that took the survey about our new website. We took all of your comments to heart and change is underway. Be looking for your suggestions to be put into action in the next month or two.

Thank you all for your continued commitment to doing the next right thing.

Sincerely,

Celebrate Earth Day
ECO-CELL and Zoo Partners Use Cell Phone Recycling Programs to Promote Earth Day, Raising Awareness of Effects E-Waste has on the Environment

ECO-CELL is proud to promote Earth Day in partnership withZoos throughout the nation. Zoos all across the country will be using ECO-CELL recycling programs to raise money for conservation programs and awareness of the importance of recycling electronics.

There are over 250 million cell phone users in the U.S. with nearly 1 billion cell phones currently in retirement. Less than 10% of unwanted cell phones are recycled each year. Recycling the precious metals and other materials not only conserves resources, but also prevents air pollution, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. It also helps the environment by saving energy and keeping useable and valuable materials out of landfills and incinerators.

Additionally, an ore called Coltan (columbite-tantalite) is a source of the element tantalum, which is an essential coating for components of cell phones and other electronic products. This ore is often found in the Congo in the middle of endangered gorilla and elephant habitats. Mining destroys this vital habitat.

According to the ENOUGH PROJECT, these mineral ores, as well as gold, are also the principal source of revenue for armed groups and military units that prey on civilians in eastern Congo. Congo's mineral wealth did not spark the conflict in eastern Congo, but war profiteering has become the fuel that keeps the region aflame and lies beneath the surface of major regional tensions.

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
