KEMIKO Decorative & Industrial Coatings @ Concrete Decor
Childrens Museum, Phoenix AZ
Decorative or Industrial? Why not both? The inaugural 2010 Concrete Décor Show was held at the Phoenix Convention center in Arizona during the month of March. The Children's Museum in downtown Phoenix was the recipient of a much needed facelift both interior and exterior complements of the exhibiting sponsors. Micro toppings, concrete stamping, decorative and industrial coatings were just a few of the featured product lines used in the restoration.
Floor before Micrtopping | Kemiko Decorative and Industrial Finishes took an active role during the weeks leading up to the 3 day show by participating in the facelift of the Children's Museum. With the help of Shelie Rigsby of Acanthatacus Inc and Tamryn Doolan of Surface Gel Tek, Kemiko addressed the 2nd story stairwell floor of the museum.
After designs were approved, Kemiko decided to answer the question: Decorative or Industrial? Our answer was why not both? With the addition of a micro topping over the old dingy, dark gray concrete floor, Kemiko proceeded to incorporate multiple combinations of its decorative products such as Rembrandt polymer stains, Stone Tone Acid Stains, the new solvent based acrylic called Kemiko's SBA, along with it's Industrial coatings SS1202 100% Solids, and Rapid Shield® Clear UV Instant Cured Coating.
Floor with Microtopping |
The floor was transformed into a living sky landing complete with clouds, a colorful flying amoeba-like creature, and multi-colored ribbons emanating from a swirled fiery orb. This artwork was topped with one of the most durable, technologically advanced low-luster finishes in the industry.
Decorative or Industrial? This piece demonstrates that a floor can be both. Kemiko believes industrial concrete does not always have to be a glossy gray, but can be a colorful complement to your area of choice. Providing the stains and coatings, Kemiko allows your imagination to come alive through creative visual art where old, gray, dingy, boring concrete used to be.
Rethink concrete with Kemiko.

Kemiko & RapidShield Training Classes
|
Decorative Concrete Institute conducts training classes featuring our KEMIKO product. These 2 day courses hosted by Bob & Lee Ann Harris are packed with information from staining techniques, design, and sealer application as well as troubleshooting various issues. Bob teaches his students step by step information on how to score, clean, stain and seal designs as well as many other insightful techniques. Bob shares his personal methods and inspirations on the floors he designs.
For several years Bob, and Lee Ann have been conducting these classes utilizing our KEMIKO Concrete Stain. This year he will be adding our RAPIDSHIELD product in 2 separate classes.

The Importance of Neutralizing the Floor After Staining Neutralization of the concrete surface, after using an acid stain, is the most important step in achieving a beautiful, finished floor. The acid staining process leaves behind a powdery residue that needs to be removed. Also, the staining process leaves the floor with a low pH level that needs to be corrected in order to apply the sealer. The residue is formed from unreacted stain and concrete dust after the stain has dried and chemically reacted with the concrete. This residue must be removed from the surface of the concrete in order for the sealer or wax to bond directly to the concrete surface. If there is any residue left behind, the sealer will adhere to the residue and not to the concrete surface; this can cause whiting and/or delamination. Concrete that is not properly cleaned with an alkaline cleanser, such as Neutra Clean, can remain low in pH. A low pH will have an adverse reaction with the sealer. Water rinsing alone is not sufficient. A floor surface that has a neutral pH is ideal to apply sealers. Floors that are not properly neutralized can experience slower dry time with their sealer, especially acrylics. They also can have bonding issues with the concrete surface. Alkaline cleaners, like Neutra Clean, are the best way to bring the pH of concrete from acidic to neutral. Neutra Clean is superior to the old school method of baking soda and water. A baking soda and water mixture only neutralizes the surface. It may also add more residue to the floor therefore extra cleaning may be required. Neutra Clean offers a cost effective solution by neutralizing and cleaning in one step. Once diluted per label instructions, one gallon of Neutra Clean can effectively neutralize and clean up to 4000 square feet of concrete. Neutralizing and washing the surface after the staining process is best achieved using a slow speed floor buffer or walk-behind scrubber with Neutra Clean. If neither a buffer or a scrubber is available, use a medium bristle push broom to scrub the floor. After scrubbing the floor, the water and Neutra Clean solution is to be vacuumed up with an acid resistant wet/dry vacuum. Give the floor a clean water rinse and when the water remains clear you will need to do a test to see if the floor is clean. When the floor is dry, take an old white shop towel or old t-shirt and get it damp. Once damp, wipe gently across the floors surface to see if any residue is remaining on the floor. Do this in a few different areas of the floor. If the towel or t-shirt is not exhibiting color pick-up, the residue is removed and one could continue to seal the floor once it is completely dry. If color is still coming up on the towel or t-shirt, continue with cleaning of the floor.
