Greetings!

Spring is always full of things to celebrate. From Week of the Young Child celebrations to Earth Day to our Special Stars Camp, Head Start of Greater Dallas has been busy teaching children and building families.

Week of the Young Child is particularly dear to my heart because it gives us a designated week to celebrate with our families the joy these children bring to our lives every day. Our staff and teachers work all year to plan fun, creative and unique experiences for our children. Parents participated in the activities and celebrated their child in a new way. They helped design banners, decorated classroom and provided valuable support to the teachers.

This year, for the first time in several years, our Special Stars Camp came to fruition and gave our Head Start families with special needs children a chance to play, learn and grow in a stimulating environment. The two day event held at Skyline Ranch allowed parents to engage in adult dialogue while the children to engaged in activities designed especially for them. A petting zoo, train rides, games and face painting made for a busy afternoon. Read more about this special day for families below.

I hope you are following us on Facebook so you can keep track of the numerous activities going on around the greater Dallas area. Consider volunteering at a Head Start Center near you to experience for yourself the difference Head Start is making in the lives of children and their families every day.

Sincerely,

Wanda M. Smith

Week of the Young Child

At Head Start of Greater Dallas, every week is Week of the Young Child! However, from April 23-27, our staff, teachers and parents organized unique and creative learning experiences geared towards celebrating each child. From fun dress-up days to music and dance, petting zoos and a prek prom, our children had a great week feeling loved and honored. A special thanks to our hardworking parents and staff who thought outside the box and made this WOYC the best one yet!

Flower childHead Start Hosts Special Stars Camp for HSGD Special Needs Kids

More than 400 Head Start of Greater Dallas special needs children and their parents attended the Special Stars Camp at Skyline Ranch to celebrate Week of the Young Child. Along with various activities for children, a panel of special services experts answered parent's questions and raised awareness of community resources available to these families.

Ten percent, of the HSGD population is made up of special needs children, many of whom would go without the necessary services without the help of Head Start. The largest needs are for speech therapy, autism services, and those with emotional or behavioral disturbances.

Donations were given by numerous community businesses including: 97.9 The Beat, Boston Market, Burger King, Care Options, Chili's, IMAX, Kids Care, Kroger, Neighborhood Credit Union, Olive Garden, Sam's Club and Starbucks.
