Head Start Awareness Month

October 2011
team
Head Start's Knock Out Cancer Team at the Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure October 15th.

As we feel the first chill of fall, let me take a moment to invite you to help keep a child warm this season. Our Head Start Board of Directors is hosting the Second Annual Coats for Kids Coat Drive benefitting the children of Head Start of Greater Dallas. From now until November 30th, you can donate a new or gently used children's coat at one of these drop off locations. For more info, read below or visit our web site.

October is National Head Start Awareness Month as well as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our effort this month was to partner the two causes and educate the mothers and grandmothers of our 4,400 Head Start children about the importance of breast cancer prevention and detection. In many of the areas we serve, specifically southern Dallas County, the population of women is under-reached by breast health organizations. We felt as members of these communities, it was our duty to educate the mothers and involve the children in this most important quest to save lives.

As supporters of Head Start, you play a vital role in our ability to remain in communities like South Dallas and partner with organizations like The Bridge Breast Network to outreach to the under-served.

Thank you for all you do for Head Start and the families we serve.

Head Start Kids Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer!

October is both Head Start and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Head Start is partnering with organizations like The Bridge Breast Network to educate our parents, particularly moms, on the importance of breast health and prevention through early detection and healthy living. Children are getting involved and walking to fight cancer and release balloons in honor of loved ones lost to cancer.

Additional demographic data shows the population to be predominately African American with high initial stage III and IV breast cancer." - Parkland Health Hospital Services

Head Start of Greater Dallas has six centers in these areas of south Dallas and is using this month of October to reach out to mothers and grandmothers and educate this under-served population on the importance of early detection, prevention and treatment options. It is important to get children involved to raise awareness at every level of the community on this important issue.

Support Head Start - Volunteer Today!
Head Start of Greater Dallas' mission is to provide children with the foundation of skills and knowledge they need to be successful in school and life and foster self-reliant families and communities.

Community contributions of time, leadership, finances and other resources are much appreciated and allow us to serve the growing demographic that needs us so much. With your support, Head Start families are able to receive a range of services that are far beyond the scope of the program.

To learn more about our mission and comprehensive services to more than 4,400 children in Dallas County, please visit our website atwww.hsgd.org.

The agency receives 80 percent of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families. Head Start of Greater Dallas generates the remaining 20 percent or nearly $8,000,000, through contributions, grants, community donations, and volunteer hours each year.

Your time volunteering is valuable. We can't reach this goal without the support of the community. To become a community volunteer, contact
