Greetings!
The 2010-2011 school year has come to a close. This year, Head Start of Greater Dallas served more than 4,400 preschool age children at 40 centers across the Metroplex. These children were exposed to the highest quality early childhood education curriculum available and showed significant positive gains in their testing from the beginning of the year to the end. Without Head Start, many of these children would have entered kindergarten without the important early learning skills developed at our centers.
It is the mission of Head Start of Greater Dallas to provide children with the foundation of skills and knowledge they need to be successful in school and in life and foster self-reliant families and communities. Whether it is through language and literacy efforts or math and science activities, our students enter public kindergarten on track and ready to learn. Many of our end of year activities revolve around summer learning. Our staff encourages parents and children to continue to read, exercise and explore by giving them the resources they need, many times through generous donations. Our students continue to develop their early learning skills throughout the summer.
I would like to thank our staff and teachers for their tireless efforts to prepare our children for kindergarten, and our community partners both corporate and individual for the volunteer time and other contributions that have impacted our children and families.
Sincerely, Wanda J. Smith CEO |
Head Start Teams Up to Teach Bike Safety
In an effort to educate families about the importance of safe summer activities, the Margaret Cone Head Start Center partnered with the Texas Medical Association (TMA) and the Dallas Police Department for a bike safety event. The children were fitted with a free bicycle helmet and encouraged to wear them every time they rode their bicycles as a simple way to reduce injury. TMA's Hard Hats for Little Heads program gave away more than 2,000 bicycle helmets in May, which was Bike Month. Thank you TMA and DPD for your partnership and work to keep our children safe this summer!

Volunteer Spotlight - Hewlett Packard |
HP Volunteers Get Their Hands Dirty to Get Ferguson-Oates Cleaned Up!

Spark the Love of Reading this Summer |
HSGD Board Members Sparked the Love of Reading
In an effort to encourage our children and families to read together throughout the summer months, the Head Start Board of Directors kicked off the "Spark the Love of Reading" book drive. The effort brought in more than 1,600 age appropriate books that were given to Head Start children to take home for summer reading. Board members and many friends and supporters of Head Start donated books and read to children at centers across the Metroplex. Book donations for children ages 3 to 5 and volunteers for story time are always welcome at the Head Start center nearest you!
Dallas-based employees of The McGraw-Hill Companies including Standard & Poor's a MGH subsidiary, recently volunteered their time by hosting two reading events for Head Start of Greater Dallas. On May 20 and May 27, employees helped foster a lifelong love of reading among preschoolers from HSGD's Science Place II and Davids' Place facilities through princess- and pirate-themed reading events. Volunteers read books and helped students with arts and crafts in an effort to encourage reading throughout the summer months.

Special Services Fair Hosts Blazin' Blake |

Parents of Special Needs Children Enrolled at HSGD had a Special Treat with Speaker
The Head Start Special Services Parent Fair was held this past April to give parents access to resources for their special needs child. This year, we were honored to have Blake Lindsey as our guest speaker. Lindsey, a motivational speaker who lost his sight during infancy, spoke to our parents about how he was raised. His parents had their sight and taught him to live in a world without his. The fair is held annually and serves more than 400 families of children with special needs enrolled at Head Start. Many of these children would not receive specialized care without the help of Head Start of Greater Dallas.

Davids' Place Preschoolers Perform Violin Concert After Months of Lessons
The Head Start Board of Directors received quite a treat at the last board meeting of the school year. Nine students from the Davids' Place Head Start Center in Jubilee Park performed a violin concert for them after six months of weekly violin lessons. The lessons were made possible by a generous contribution from volunteer Mike Witte and a matched gift from his employer Encana Oil and Gas. The students played selections they had worked on all year including "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Special project contributions are always welcomed and encouraged to give our children exposure to the arts and other areas. For more information on giving, please contact Community Development.

 | Summer Take-home Activities for Preschoolers |
Head Start families have summer take-home activities to do with their preschooler. Here are some examples of activities you can do with your child:
- Sorting: have them make groups out of flash cards with pictures on them
- Counting: continue learning numbers and practicing so they are ready for school in the fall
- Writing: children love to show you they can write their name and other letters and words.
|
 | Summer Safety | Summer is here and the Texas heat means lots of time in the neighborhood pool. Remember these tips for your child as you begin swimming season.
- Wear sunscreen: Your child may protest but SPF of 15 or greater should be applied and reapplied often when in the sun. - Stay hydrated: Avoid the hottest hours of the day 10am-4pm and make sure your child is drinking water to avoid dehydration and overheating. - Review CPR Training: An adult who could perform CPR should be close by at all times when children are in or around water. For more on CPR click here.
