Agency Spotlight: Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation

Six community leaders who are prostate cancer survivors and a medical advisory committee of physicians from around the state formed the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation (APCF) in 2000. The Foundation's mission is to promote awareness, encourage timely detection and support improved treatment of prostate cancer in Arkansas. The APCF believes that access to information and treatment should be available to all men in Arkansas.

Education, survivor support and timely detection are top priorities for the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation. The Foundation sponsors public education programs throughout the state, including health fairs, industrial worksites and churches. The Foundation's Prostate Health Resource Center in Little Rock is a first stop for newly diagnosed men and their families, as well as an ongoing source of information and support for prostate cancer survivors. The APCF web site, www.arprostatecancer.org, continues to provide prostate cancer information and support that is available at any time. A toll-free number is also available. The APCF provides free screening on its mobile unit collaborating with health departments, churches, local physicians, nurses and other community based organizations. The Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation PEER NETWORK provides emotional support through group settings as well as individual telephone support for men and their partners through the SURVIVOR-MENTOR program.

Current cancer surveillance data in Arkansas demonstrates that many areas of the state experience prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates that are significantly higher than the national average. Reasons for these increased rates include barriers to access, ineffective cancer education, lack of timely follow-up for suspicious screening results, unavailable and/or inadequate cancer diagnosis and treatment options, and personal and financial obstacles. Although the death rate for prostate cancer has been decreasing in Arkansas, there has been a 55% increase in premature deaths (less than age 65) due to prostate cancer. Of this group, most were diagnosed with late stage cancer. This year, 1,980 Arkansans will hear the words, "You have prostate cancer." 360 will die.

Awareness and education are becoming recognized as effective means to move Arkansans through the continuum of medical care to ensure timely intervention-from suspicious screening to cancer treatment. The Foundation believes that access to prostate cancer screening and treatment should be available to all men in Arkansas, especially those experiencing disparities. The APCF Campaign Against Prostate Cancer provides messages to motivate men and expedite access to screening, diagnosis and treatment. Because of the Campaign, men and their families will:
  • Recognize that in Arkansas men are more likely to die from prostate cancer than women are to die of breast cancer
  • Acknowledge the need for annual screenings
  • Understand the screening process
  • Determine whether to be screened or not
  • Schedule a free screening in their community
  • Obtain information regarding the disease
  • Contribute to treatment decisions
  • Enhance their personal support system
  • Refer others to the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation for resources

"Change the Sign"

A blind boy sat on the steps with a hat by his feet.

He held a sign which said:

"I am blind; please help."

There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man took a few coins and dropped them in the hat.

He then took the sign, turned it around and wrote new words.

He put the sign back so everyone who passed would see it.

Soon the hat began to fill up.

More people were giving to the blind boy.

The man who had changed the sign returned.

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked,

"Did you change my sign?  What did you write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth -- but in a different way."

I wrote: "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it."

Both signs told people the boy was blind.

The first sign simply said the boy was blind.

The second sign let people know they were blessed they were not blind.

 Be creative.

Be innovative.

Think differently.

Think positively.

When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry,

Show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile.

 Face your past without regret.

 Handle your present with confidence.

Prepare for your future without fear.

Keep your faith.

It's a beautiful thing to see a person smiling.

It's a beautiful thing knowing you are the reason behind the smile!

The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.
