Professional Empowerment
an original article by charlon bobo   A brief history of Labor Day and what it means to entrepreneurs

LaborDay
Labor Day is much more than a day off or another opportunity to attempt to get caught up on your never-ending task list.

Let's start with a history lesson.

The origins of Labor Day are more than a century old.

The first Labor Day parade in New York City was held in September 1982. Two men are credited with playing an important role not only in bringing about the parade but the holiday as well. Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, N.J., and Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter who helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, are said to have suggested a holiday to honor working people in the United States.

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."

Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday - a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership - the American worker.

This day is cause for celebration among entrepreneurs. We, too, contribute to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Our contribution also provides hope; hope for others to follow a similar path to a life of freedom; an unencumbered exploration of our own definition of abundant living.

Smart Marketing Empowerment
by charlon bobo   Create a Facebook business page

Facebook Logo
My longtime mentor asked, "Do you have a Facebook page?" "Of course!" I responded and sent her a link. "No," she said, "a (Facebook) business page, not a profile page."

[insert a chasm of silence here]

A business page? Also known as a fan page? Who knew? Okay, maybe everyone else on the planet, but for those of you who have been so occupied with managing your business that this little gem slipped through the cracks, here's the scoop:

If you use FB for business, you know how your FB profile page friends are a mix of friends, family and business-related contacts? The lines can get quite blurry and messy. You don't necessarily want business people gaining access to the more personal aspects of your life, and you don't necessarily want to bore your family and friends with just business. (As hard as that is to imagine because business is YOUR life, it has been known to happen!)

There are also times someone knows someone you know and they want to connect directly. You don't feel comfortable approving their friend request, but you'd like to do something with their desire to connect. A FB business page is the perfect solution! (See more details at Facebook Business Pages help.)

A FB business page makes the distinctions between your personal and professional lives much more clear and with a simple hit of the "like" button, visitors are automatically added as someone who "likes this page" (vs. being a "friend" on your profile page). Anyone who "likes" your page is automatically added instead of you having to approve them manually. Obviously that's a time-saver for business owners and builds your business exposure exponentially simply by having a specific and separate business presence.

If you're ready to get your own Facebook business page RIGHT NOW, click here, "like" me if you wish by clicking the "like" button at the top with the "thumbs up" logo, and scroll down. Near the very bottom of the page in the left column, you'll see a link that says Create a Page for My Business. Click that and you'll be on your way to FB business nirvana.

an original article by charlon bobo   Hey, give me back my wrinkle!

Wrinkle
These were my words to the photographer who touched-up my recent business headshots. She did a beautiful job editing out my wrinkle and had no idea that with a few strokes of her mouse, she was erasing something I value. Assuming I would want it removed, I was adamant about having her start over again, making any other changes she wanted, but leaving my adored forehead wrinkle.

You see, that wrinkle represents something; something important... see full article here
