and what it means for entrepreneurs![]()
Labor Day is much more than a day off or
another opportunity to attempt to get caught up
on your
never-ending task list.
Let's start with a history lesson. The origins of Labor Day are more than a century old. The first Labor Day parade in New York City was held in September 1982. Two men are credited with playing an important role not only in bringing about the parade but the holiday as well. Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, N.J., and Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter who helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, are said to have suggested a holiday to honor working people in the United States. "Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation." Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday - a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership - the American worker. This day is cause for celebration among entrepreneurs. We, too, contribute to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Our contribution also provides hope... hope for others to follow a similar path to a life of freedom... an unencumbered exploration of our own definition of abundant living. |

Don't labor it alone, call for calm![]()
In your moments of the inevitable
business-related meltdown (we all have them),
how many times
have you wished to pick up
the telephone and call someone who possesses
a soothing voice, objectivity,
entrepreneurial expertise and the ability to
quickly guide you to clarity?
Impossible, you say? Think -- and dare -- again. A recent frantic email from a client reminded me how much we benefit from the input of professionals in our moments of mini- or maxi-crisis. I could feel the distress in her email voice and immediately called to offer my assistance. She was having difficulty communicating her preferences to a graphic designer and had me review the initial designs with what I heard her saying she wanted. I gave candid input on each logo design based on my years of business expertise, knowledge of ever-changing consumer trends and the direction of her budding business. After addressing a few other priorities and offering tips on how to maximize the relationship with her graphic artist, we finished our conversation with one last request. She asked me to develop a list of taglines to use in her marketing materials. As you can clearly see, my business is much more than writing and editing copy to increase effectiveness. My commitment is to provide solutions, and that comes in many forms... including providing an objective sounding board so you walk away with confidence and inspiration. Whether it's a bit of cheerleading, encouragement, tossing around ideas, or prioritizing your endless task list, I am available to talk with you when you need it most.* Results speak for themselves. At the end of our conversation, my client she said she could actually breathe again; something she wasn't doing deeply only 30 minutes earlier. Sitting in your office -- probably working solitarily -- rarely do you have access to much-needed support as well as tangible and proven methods to buzz right through the confusion. Working in a virtual world doesn't give us easy, direct access to each other... until now. Call me! On this Labor Day (and always), don't labor alone! It's the slowest and most inefficient method of realizing your dreams. Instead, how does this sound?
Locking in your time now guarantees direct and immediate access to me* the next time you require the input of not only someone who genuinely cares, but an expert artisan entrepreneur who desires your success as much as you do! Email me privately (charlon@editcopyproof.com) to formalize this list-only offer. * Each participant is given a priority telephone number that rings directly to me. No waiting for a response in your heightened moment. You and I will collaboratively take care of business right then, right there!
"Charlon's personal and professional clarity remarkably rubs off on everyone she serves. Recently I was in the midst of developing my image, branding, and labels for my company... all at the same time. I was so overloaded that I lost the true center of what I wanted and how I wanted it to look. It seemed that it was even harder expressing my needs to my designers, or at least holding my ground with what I wanted. While speaking with Charlon, she helped me weed through all the muck that was cluttering my mind and get right back to my core -- in a matter of minutes! By posing laser-focused questions, providing a sacred and safe space to explore my current frustrations, and generously offering beneficial options, I felt a newfound freedom. After weeks of feeling like my chest was tightening, I felt instantly relieved. I went back at my tasks clearer and more determined than ever, and got exactly what I wanted from everyone involved... including myself. Thanks, Charlon! You Rock!" A one-woman Labor Day celebration![]()
If Labor Day is traditionally "dedicated to
the social and
economic achievements of American
workers,"
are dedicated to celebration of the personal and professional achievements afforded by entrepreneurship This day gives me an opportunity to focus on and revel in the freedoms I experience as an entrepreneur. With advances in technology -- by which I am ever-amazed -- I have the ability to dream big and actually realize those visions. I am only as limited as my willingness to plan, do the work, and prepare to reap the rewards. With no outside limitations, I can truly bring about a perfect life... one that fits my personal definition. For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of being an entrepreneur is helping other entrepreneurs manifest their dreams. Together we forge uncharted trails to reach new heights... spreading our passion and inspiring others in the process. On this Labor Day, between parades, BBQs and putting away your white shoes and bags (no white after Labor Day, y'know!), take the time to send out your feelings of gratitude for limitless opportunities to explore your highest potential via entrepreneurship. No other experience I know provides such vast liberties -- and responsibilities -- as business ownership. That's cause for celebration. In Sisterhood, Light & Love, ![]()
