Common Courtesy... Not So Common Anymore
Charlon Bobo   Respond with something!
Respond

In the past few weeks I've noticed something that makes me wonder about the term "common courtesy." I sent emails to friends and colleagues, proposals to prospective clients, and inquiries to former clients. I whopping 65% of them never responded to even say something like:

  1. I received your email.
  2. Cannot talk or meet now. I'm inundated with projects at work. I'll call you next week.
  3. Thanks for following up. I'll contact you as soon as I'm ready.
  4. I cannot make it that weekend, but let's try the 19th.
  5. My current budget for copywriting is less than half of your proposal. Let's look at this again in late April.
  6. Let's begin a full review of my Web site. Give me until next Monday to finish other projects.

My friend Lisa Manyon of Write On ~ Creative wrote an article recently about taking the time to carefully craft proposals, email them to her prospects and the frustration of not hearing back. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Not a peep. I'm shocked at this behavior, because not only is it simply rude, it's unprofessional. If pros don't treat each other with ultimate respect, who will?

It may seem like such a simple thing, but make it a habit to respond... and as quickly as possible. Even if you have to say, "I am drowning right now, but will review this by day's end today," respond with something!

When you respond, be specific:
  • If you cannot get to the action item of the email, say so.
  • If you need to postpone a deadline, give a timeframe ("... by Friday").
  • If you cannot meet at the time/date indicated, provide alternatives.
If you cannot personally manage the wave of emails in a timely fashion, delegate this task to someone who can. Virtual Assistants will gladly take on this role to ensure your professional image is consistently maintained.

If you are a prospective client and decided not to hire someone, thank them for their time and briefly explain why you aren't hiring them. This gives them insight into their business and how it might be improved. Don't be to shy or embarrassed to be honest and forthright! It might seem better or easier to fade into the background, but it's not how real pros conduct the business of their businesses!

I know... we're all busy. But c'mon.

There are no excuses
for a lack of manners

Within my circle of reliable entrepreneurial women, at the longest it is only a matter of hours before I hear back. Sometimes it's minutes and I love that. One quick response or answer and I'm able to move ahead with the reason I emailed in the first place. It's so simple.

I extend them the very same courtesy because to maintain relationships we must give them our attention. Responding quickly let's our colleagues, clients and customers know our connection is important and top priority, no matter how many other things we may have going.

Let THAT be the burning impression of us in their minds!

Now, go forth and RESPOND!

Copyediting In The News
ABC News | Brian Rooney   Man Travels the Nation Correcting Typos on Signs

Misspelled sign
Some of the littlest things are big to Jeff Deck, who is traveling the country in search of mistakes.

He's not looking for big ones, just the small ones like the missing "c" in "cappucino" and the misplaced apostrophe in "Today Special's" on the menu board.

This 28-year-old Dartmouth graduate is crossing America searching for and correcting typographical errors in public places.

Wearing a brown fedora, he's the Indiana Jones of typos. He finds them on parking signs, where cars will be towed at "owners expense," and at the "stationary" store, where they sell "dye cast" metal key chains.

Frequently, the problem is those wayward apostrophes.

"The apostrophe shows up when it's not wanted and is never there when you need it," he said as he walked along Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, finding plenty of typos wherever he looked.

He came across a T-shirt shop where the dash was missing between the "T" and the "shirt."

In an Army-Navy store they were offering a "hellicopter" helmet and a bullet "bandoleer."

At the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, a coffee chain, the chalk board offered a "Sweedish" berry drink.

This started last summer at Deck's fifth college reunion, where he ran into old friends becoming doctors and lawyers and entering careers that could change the country. As a creative writing major, he decided that he too could change America by correcting its typographical errors.

"I've always been aware of typos wherever I go," he said dryly. "I figured that it was a national problem."

So far he has put 5,000 miles on his 1997 Nissan Sentra. Friends come along for a few weeks at a time.

His search has taken him all the way down the East Coast, across the country through the Southwest, and on to San Diego where he took a right turn to head up the West Coast.

It's all documented on his Web site for The Typo Eradication Assistance League (Teal).

In New York, he found mislabeled chicken "parmasan." In Myrtle Beach, S.C., he saw "tie dye" shirts with a "y." In Galveston, Texas, it was, "Now acepting applications," on a sign offering jobs. And in the California desert, "caramel corn" in neon was missing the second "a."

Why this is he's not sure. He said it is partly a failure of education but also that people have stopped caring about spelling.

And, he said, mistakes breed mistakes. When someone sees "strawberry's" in print, they think it's correct.

Inside a Hollywood shop, he found a sign for a commercial stationery display with the word spelled a-r-y instead of e-r-y, printed by a company that didn't know how to spell its own product.

But not only does Deck find typographical errors, he gently asks store owners and shop managers if he can fix them. He carries a little kit of markers, crayons, and white-out so he can correct just about any typo.

From the Editor's Desk
Charlon Bobo   Teach others how to treat you!

C-face
"If you're willing to trade your vast and precious life knowledge as if it has no value, it won't... to you or anyone else. Remember: We teach people how to treat us."

How does that work? How do we teach people how to treat us? By being the example of how we treat ourselves and by the clear boundaries we establish in our interactions with others.

If we tolerate unacceptable behavior, even once, we have just given our permission for it to continue. We have said, "Yes!" without even conscious awareness of it. That's why self-awareness is a key in establishing or reestablishing healthy behaviors.

You are a treasure. Treat yourself that way, raise your awareness and set clear boundaries to transform your relationship with self and others.
