The Advertising Winners & Losers of Super Bowl XLV

Even if you're not a sports fan, you probably find yourself tuning in to the Super Bowl for at least a few minutes every year just so you can catch the commercials. With $3 million as the going rate for a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl, advertisers always strive to make an impact. This year, there were  ads that  stood out in our minds for positive reasons and then there were the ones that made us think "what a waste of money!"

Advertising Age gives a review of the most recalled and best liked ads, according to Nielsen Ratings.

The Intersection of Social Media and PR

One of the new realities of 21st century marketing and PR is that if you misstep, the word spreads like wildfire. How you deal with those PR nightmares can define your company for years to come. As an example, consider the BPGlobal account on Twitter that was a PR nightmare for BP during the Gulf oil spill.

This month, two organizations encountered major Social Media PR wildfires. The first, Groupon, was attacked across the Social Media world because of its controversial Super Bowl ad. The second, The Red Cross, had to react to a Social Media blunder that went viral.
Groupon did not react well, while the Red Cross response is being painted as an ideal way to react to Social Media disasters.

A New Model for Receiving News

Since the iPad launched almost one year ago, newspaper and magazine publishers have sold single issues on the iPad. The sales results have fared extremely well. In fact, Wired, a technology magazine, sold over 20,000 digital copies in December alone.

On February 2, 2011, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation launched the Daily, a newspaper sold only on the iPad. Priced at 99 cents per week, the Daily is the first of its kind to offer recurring subscriptions through Apple.
