THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

The Reason for the Season
As we prepare for Christmas, let's not allow the busyness of the season to keep us from focusing on Christ our Savior and experiencing the joy of trusting Him each moment. The Teaching Home newsletter archives offer some Bible study ideas and unit study suggestions that can help you both plan your Christmas day celebration and integrate Christmas into music, art, history, and more! Enjoy!

HOMESCHOOL Q&A

High-School-Level Courses Completed Before Grade 9

Q. I have a question concerning high school classes taken before ninth grade. How do you give credit for these courses? Where should these classes be placed on an actual transcript since they do not fit into the fall of the freshman year?

Dr. Brian RayA WORTHY CAUSE -- AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE

Founded by a homeschool dad, Dr. Brian D. Ray, back when homeschooling was not legal in most states, NHERI has faithfully worked to compile homeschool statistics that have then been used in court cases and legislatures to help promote and defend homeschooling. Every homeschool family in America is, in one way or another, blessed by Dr. Brian Ray's labor of love. Today, NHERI helps homeschoolers in America--and around the world--by providing statistical data and research to show homeschooling works.

This Christmas season, please consider supporting the work of Dr. Brian Ray and the non-profit NHERI through a tax-deductible donation of any amount.

You can donate online or by filling out this form. NHERI is a non-profit organization, and donations are tax-deductible.

SPECIAL ARTICLEHomeschool Makeover

Homeschool Makeover

This past August, a group of homeschool volunteers had the opportunity to both bless and be blessed in a homeschool version of "Extreme Home Makeover." Read the touching story and check out the pictures.  Be sure to also tune in to the Homeschool Heartbeat December 15 and 16 to hear HEAV's president, Anne Miller, discuss the project.

4) Parting Thought - Why a Star?

Secular media seems to carry new stories (or old repeats) each year in an effort to explain away the Star of Bethlehem. The upshot is that if one can dismiss the star, one can dismiss the Savior; but, the authors of this article say we should ask, "'Why a star at all?' That is, why would God want to announce the birth of His only begotten Son to a group of eastern sky-watchers with a star in the first place?" You can read their complete thoughts on their "Why a Star?" blog post.

5) Worth Repeating
"For the Christ-child who comes is the Master of all; no palace too great, no cottage too small."

- Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), American Episcopal clergyman. Brooks was a famous preacher who was born, educated, served much of his life, and died in Boston. He also wrote hymns, one of the best known of which is "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Learn more about Phillips Brooks at Project Gutenberg or at NetHymnal.
