THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Delighting in Uniqueness
Each child is unique, as any mom with more than one child can attest! This week, let's remember to encourage our children to be the unique individuals God created them to be--and to appreciate their brothers and sisters for their uniqueness too!

HOMESCHOOLING AROUND THE WORLD

Homeschooling Around the WorldSweden Update
Officials in Sweden still keep Domenic Johansson from his parents more than a year after snatching him from an airplane while he and his parents were in the process of leaving the country
. The judge in the case also barred the parents' choice of a very successful family attorney, Ruby Harrold-Claesson. In another town, officials will not allow the "Robbins" family (a pseudonym) to even present their case in court, but simply deny it. Keep our Swedish friends in prayer.

Homeschool Day at Berkeley Plantation &
HEAV Bike-a-Thon

The cool, fall day was perfect for the HEAV Bike-a-Thon from Charles City Courthouse to Berkeley Plantation--the site of our nation's first Thanksgiving in 1619. Visiting the historic plantation and its beautifully maintained grounds on the James River was like stepping back into another time.

Frontier Culture Museum

Homeschool Day

In late October, beautiful fall foliage and a crisp breeze welcomed hundreds of homeschool families to the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. Parents and students learned about the different countries from which the early settlers came--places such as Ireland, England, Germany, and Africa. Each group brought their own ways of farming and their own customs to America.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
"Ahead of Modern Homeschoolers" - Dr. Brian Ray
In this article, Dr. Brian D. Ray, founder and president of the National Home Education Research Institute, writes about the well-accepted premise that parents know best how to educate their own children, sharing interesting quotes from a 1971 author outside of the homeschool movement. Dr. Ray makes the case that some of home educators' key ideas were understood and promoted before and outside of the modern home-education movement.

4) Parting Thought - The Farmer's Puzzle

This old puzzle--or similar ones found on the Internet--may occupy children while you travel this month.

A farmer is trying to cross a river. He wants to take with him a rabbit, carrots, and a fox, but he has only a small raft. He can just bring one item at a time across the river because his raft can only fit the rabbit, the carrots, or the fox. How does he cross the river without having the fox eat the rabbit or the rabbit eat the carrots (which they will do if any two are left together without him present)?

- Author Unknown (See the answer at item 3.7.)

5) Worth Repeating
"
Back of the loaf is the snowy flour,

And back of the flour is the mill;

And back of the mill is the wheat, and the shower

And the sun, and the Father's will."
-
Maltbie D. Babcock (1858-1901), American minister and hymn writer. Reverend Babcock, once a healthy, athletic young man, reportedly wore himself out in Christian service before dying from a short illness at just 42. After his death, his widow published a poem he had written, which is now sung as the hymn "This Is My Father's World." Read more about Reverend Babcock and hear some of his hymns at The Cyber Hymnal.
