Greetings!

Hard to believe three months has gone by since our last newsletter - all our best intentions waylaid again!  In our defence, we have been busy...not just watching Masterchef.

Autumn has passed us by - what a bumper season for mushrooms -  Slippery Jacks, Saffron Milkcaps, Fields - someone even said they had found cepes - maybe next year!

You can tell its football season because people start asking for pie books again.  Anything would have to be better than the microwaved offerings at the MCG - we've taken to using leftover casseroles and stews in pies - when we have the time.

The Melbourne Food & Wine Festival was a huge success.  The queue for Nigella was quite unbelievable.  Graciously she stayed and signed books for everybody who queued (both days!) - just as well as we weren't sure how we were going to tell some people they might miss out.  Other highlights included the down-to-earth and lovely Rachel Allen, Elena Arzak, the somewhat surreal Bompas & Parr - who thought Jelly would be that seductive?  Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the Festival and the rumour mill is already working overtime - we're expecting big things

This month we have an event, a number of few new books, some news on forth-coming books from local authors later in the year and a bit more...

Author Event: 5 July - Marion: recipes & stories from a hungry cook - an evening with Marion Grasby - former contestant on Masterchef Series 2 - you know - the one everyone liked!
Books for Cooks, Plume & Josie Bones
Marion by Marion Grasby
Marion by Marion Grasby $49.95

Despite all the doom and gloom about publishing and bookselling in general, one of the bright spots of news earlier this year was the launch of a new imprint dedicated to food & lifestyle publishing with Australian authors - published here in Melbourne - Plum

Their first book is Marion: recipes & stores from a hungry cook by Marion Grasby.

Marion will be joining us on 5 July to launch her book and share her recipes & adventures in food.

This should be a great evening.
Marion loves food. If you ask what her favourite food is she'll list at least ten things. A little bit Thai (courtesy of her Mum) and a little bit Australian (courtesy of her Dad), Marion's love of food and travel are ingrained  - she spent her childhood living and eating throughout Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Australia.

In 2008 Marion's life changed forever when she left behind a career as an ABC journalist to study for a Masters of Gastronomy. This allowed her to indulge her passion for food and gave her the confidence to audition for MasterChef.  During the 2010 series, Marion wowed the country with her incredible cooking talent, her assured palate, her sunny personality and warmth.  Fast forward a year and Marion has now realised one of her dreams - her glorious first cookbook Marion: Recipes and stories from a hungry cook.

The book draws on Marion's own travels and experiences; the places she's been  and the people she's cooked with. There are Thai, Italian, French and Middle Eastern inspired dishes ... and of course, some firmly Aussie ones too.

The recipes are designed for the home cook, food to make every night of the week. Divided into Mornings, Bowl Food, Small Plates, Big Plates, Sweetness and Things in Jars, Marion offers deliciously simple recipes such as My First Mussels, Colour-Me-Autumn Salad, Simple Seafood & Chorizo Soup and Beggar's Chicken, as well as dinner-party showstoppers such as Chilli Mud Crab, Eight-Hour Lamb with Tomato and Herb Gravy, and Coconut and Kaffir Lime Panna Cottas with Strawberries and Lime Syrup.  Sample menus show how to group dishes together for various occasions, making meal-planning a breeze.

Alongside stunning food photography by Sharyn Cairns, Marion is peppered with photographs from Marion's travels throughout Australia and Thailand, including evocative images of Marion's visit to the Thai village where her mum grew up.

Quirky step-by-step illustrations by Melbourne artist Jane Reiseger reflect Marion's fun approach to food, and with fascinating anecdotes and Marion's invaluable cooking tips on every page, Marion is not only beautiful to look at, but a delight to read.

As usual, our event is free, but bookings are essential.  Tastes will be available from the book as well.

Books: Paletas, Raspados & Aguas Fresca
by Fany Gerson

Paletas by Fany Gerson
Paletas by Fany Gerson $29.95

Over the past year or so we have been receiving more and more enquiries for authentic Mexican books.  Our traditional recomendations have been Diana Kennedy and Rick Bayless.  Now we have a new author to add - Fany Gerson.

Mexican born, Fany is a highly qualified & regarded pastry chef.  Her first book 'My Sweet Mexico'  is a wonderful look at Mexican baking.  Now she has released this delightful companion to Mexican ice pops - paletas.  Yes it is the middle of winter but the flavor combinations are mouthwatering: apricot-chamomile ice pops, hibiscus-raspberry pops, spiced tomato-tequila ice pops; Veracruz-style shaved ice...you get the idea.

Dining: Pope Joan
a review
Pope Joan Cafe East Brunswick
Pope Joan - Cafe - Nicholson St East Brunswick
With young children, we often find ourselves going out for breakfast/brunch rather than dinner.  Last year Matt Wilkinson, ex Vue de Monde, ex Circa & chief lad about town opened Pope Joan just around the corner from home.

Channeling 1930s British with sustainable organic practices this is a cracking addition to the vibrant cafe scene North of the Yarra.  There is an almost whimsical note to the menu - Boiled Eggs & Soldiers?  Or how about Kedgeree?  Or a coddled egg or two.  The coffee is Allpress and the service on song.  A lot of the vegetables and herbs come from the garden out the back.

The lunch menu also short, is long on provenance and local produce.  The 'Cornish', a sandwich named for Richard Cornish, food writer & co-author of Movida is an almost permanent fixture - particularly now it was one of the sandwiches that delivered Matt, Sandwich Chef of the Year at the recent Australasian Sandwich Championships.

Magazine: Lucky Peach - Issue One
by David Chang & Others
Lucky Peach Issue 1
Lucky Peach edited by David Chang $16.95

Tipped off by a customer or two, we'll be stocking Lucky Peach... due any day.

In the words of the publisher - McSweeney's (they are pretty good with words)

"Lucky Peach is a new journal of food writing, published on a quarterly basis by McSweeney's. It is a creation of David Chang (the James Beard Award-winning chef behind the Momofuku restaurants in New York), Peter Meehan (co-author of the Momofuku cookbook), and Zero Point Zero Production-producers of the Travel Channel's Emmy Award-winning Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

The result of this collaboration is a mélange of travelogue, essays, art, photography, and rants in a full-color, meticulously designed format. Recipes will defy the tired ingredients-and-numbered-steps formula. They'll be laid out sensibly, inspired by the thought process that went into developing them.

The aim of Lucky Peach is to give a platform to a brand of food writing that began with unorthodox authors like Bourdain, resulting in a publication that appeals to diehard foodies as well as fans of good writing and art in general."

In store in a few days...  can't wait...!

Books: The Gastronomy of Marriage
Michelle Maisto

The Gastronomy of Marriage by Michelle Maisto
The Gastronomy of Marriage
by Michelle Maisto
Was $29.95 now $9.95

Sometimes, a great book lands on our desk at a great price...

The Gastronomy of Marriage is a delicate delicious memoir exploring the bounds and bonds of a relationship forged over food.

Michelle's Italian American background contrasts with her partner's Chinese background.  Both come from vibrant food cultures, albeit fiercely protective ones and this provides the focal point for a personal examination of the ties that bind.

A lovely gentle, introspective read this is quite rewarding...normally $29.95, now $9.95 while stocks last
