Protecting Your Teeth from
Acid Erosion

Due to an acidic diet and prevelance of certain digestive disorders, acid erosion of the teeth has been identified as one of the biggest concerns regarding our patients' dental health.

Acid erosion occurs when acidic food or drinks come into contact with teeth and the acid temporarily softens the tooth enamel surface. Over time, this can cause signficiant damage.

Another cause of acid erosion is GERD. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is the back up of stomach acids into the esophagus causing prolonged and frequent heartburn. This condition can alter the Ph balance of the saliva and therefore cause acid erosion of the teeth. For those who suffer from silent GERD, the symptoms are the same.

Symptoms of acid erosion in the early stages include dental pain when consuming hot or cold beverages as well as a rounded look on the surface of the tooth or even teeth with a yellow appearance as the underlying dentine begins to show through the enamel. Later stage symptoms include transparency, severe sensitivity, small cracks on the edges of the teeth and small dents on the tooth surface.

Here are some ways to prevent acid erosion:

  • Reduce or eliminate carbonated beverages and skip the sugar in your coffee and tea. If you drink something acidic, use a straw so the liquid is pushed to the back of the mouth. Try to limit the time the beverage is in your mouth.
  • After highly-acidic foods or drinks, rinse with water to neutralize the acids and wait an hour before brushing your teeth.
  • Chew sugar-free gum to produce more saliva so your teeth can remineralize.
  • Brush with a soft toothbrush and make sure your toothpaste contains flouride.

If you have any of these symptoms, please call us or discuss any concerns. We want to be sure you are comfortable and smiling!

Recent Flouride Announcement from Federal Government

The Department of Health and Human Services recently announced that they will be lowering the recommended level of fluoride in community drinking water. This is due in part to increased fluoride ingestion through toothpaste, mouthwash, bottled water, etc.

This is less of concern in our area because most homes have well water or non-fluoridated municipal water. We continue to stress the importance of fluoride supplements to prevent tooth decay and maintain optimal dental health. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 908-236-9650.

Q&A: Is there a way for me to protect my crowns?

To prevent damaging or cracking a crown, avoid chewing extremely hard foods and ice. For those of you who grind and/or clench your teeth, be sure to wear your appliance at night. Flossing between your teeth is essential if you have crowns in order to remove plaque from the crown area to where the gum line meets the tooth.
