We Have
 Earplugs Again!

Earplugs

Our new shipment of musicians' earplugs has arrived! If your student still needs earplugs, have him/her bring $10 to school and ask Sara Borchers or any band council member. The Council is handling earplugs sales during the school year. The earplugs are in Mr. G's office.

Earplugs can also be purchased directly from Nancy McGhee. You do not have to be a band student to buy earplugs. We support anyone's effort to protect hearing. These earplugs are great at loud concerts, on BART, in a movie theater if you have sensitive hearing, etc.

Thanks to all who are taking seriously the protection of hearing!

Band picnic/season preview to take place 9/15 At 5:00 pm in the stadium the marching band and color guard will be presenting a preview of their 2012 field show, "The Bride".  This is a free event and we welcome you to bring family and friends to this opening presentation of what we have learned thus far.

Something new this year!  Each family will have the opportunity to send one parent or guardian down to the field to learn how to march with their student.  Come one, come all and we hope to see you for this kick-off next Saturday!  Following the performance, please stay for a band family picnic sponsored by AFM and the Band Council.

MAGIC OF MUSIC PLANNING MEETING TUESDAY OCTOBER 2

Thank you to those who have raised their hands to help support the band.  We are just starting to do the planning for this year's Magic of Music fundraiser (set for March 24 at the Firehouse Arts Theater).  We are looking for teams to work on:

--Marketing (theme, getting people to attend, invitations )

--Donations  (tracking, auctions, sales)

--Logistics  (decorations, venue, food, program)

Can you help us?  Please plan to attend a meeting on TUESDAY OCTOBER 2, 8PM in the band room.

If you are interested in helping but can't make the meeting, please contact Ellen Pensky McGraw.

Responsible Adult PUSD Clearance

RA (aka Responsible Adult) is the term used for Parent Volunteers who coordinate logistics, supplies and provide chaperoning duties for the Amador music ensembles, and primarily the Marching Band and Colorguard. If you are thinking you might want to volunteer as a RA this season and have not yet handed in a PUSD clearance form please download one HERE.Fill it out give it to your student to give to Mr. Grantham, he will put it in the RED RA BOX in his office and I will pick it up and hand it into the office for you.

If you already have fingerprint clearance through Pleasanton Unified School District please email Jody Harcourt and write "Fingerprint Cleared Through PUSD" in the subject line. That way I will have an accurate list of volunteers since PUSD fingerprint cleared volunteers don't have to renew their clearance each year.

Uniform Update!

September 13th - pants and shoes to be delivered.  By the time you read this, all marching band students will have been fitted for a uniform!  Many students are waiting for parts of their uniforms to be delivered.  Don't worry!  We will take care of you!  Hemmed pants and altered jackets are scheduled to be delivered by Thursday, Sept. 13.  Shoes that were ordered are also expected to be delivered by that date.  (A few students needed gloves to be ordered.  These have arrived and will be placed in their shako boxes.)  By-the-way, if you still need to turn in your uniform contract, you can download it here.

September 14th and 28th - Uniform Inspections.  This year we will hold a two part Uniform Inspection.  Part I will be Friday, September 14th when students will wear their jackets, pants, and marching shoes for Band Pictures.  (Remember to bring your uniform, marching shoes, and to wear black socks!!!)  Part II will be Friday, September 28th when students will wear their full uniform for the football game.  I will be there on both days to assist, in case any uniform issues arise.  The second part of the Uniform Inspection is also where I hand over responsibility to Jody Harcourt and her fantastic RA's!  Remember, the RA's will be distributing the gloves, gauntlets, shakos and plumes, but students need to bring everything else.

Why do we do all this???  Well, part of what judges are looking for is the visual impression of the band on the field, which is a factor in their total score.  The most important visual is the straight line of the pants.  In particular, the front crease of the pants must not show a "break" near the ankle.  (In other words, the pant leg must not have a bend in it when the student is looking straight ahead.)  You can help keep the straps adjusted so the pant crease is straight, while still allowing room for the student comfortably to sit down.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Here's to a great year!
