To all RAs who helped out at our first competition, Valley Christian Quest Classic, you did a stellar job!

Saturday October 22nd we will be assisting the band at the "Foothill Band Review" right in our own hometown! For those who have signed up to RA, at this event we will be meeting at the Foothill High parking lot at approximately 7:00pm.   Sweet Tomatoes Next

Our Chili's fundraiser was well attended and we raised $150.00 for the band, just for having dinner! Thank you to all the families who were able to join us, or took advantage of ordering take out!! This program is a way for us to thank the local businesses who donate to our annual fund raiser, the Magic of Music, so please plan to attend one of the dining out nites coming up in the near future. Log onto our website and print out a flier to bring with you. Our next event is on Thur, Oct 27 at Sweet Tomatoes. Please come out and support your Band!

First Show a Success!

Congratulations to the Marching

Dons on their outstanding season opening performance at Chabot College.  The band turned in a strong performance and scored high even though they performed an incomplete show.  The opening score of 76.95 is a strong one and positions the band well for the remainder of the season.  Thanks to all who came to cheer the band and guard on Saturday.  I hope you can make it to the remaining shows this season.

Like to see the show again?  Thank you to band parent Steve Opperwall for posting videos of the band's season on his YouTube channel.  This link will take you to a video of Saturday's competition.  Check the channel often for updates of performances and sometimes even run-throughs. Thanks Steve!

Foothill Band Review this weekend    Please check the website for itinerary information for this Saturday's performance at Foothill HS.  Remember that parking will likely be a challenge.  Your student needs to arrive to Foothill at 7:29pm in uniform-please leave enough time for them to arrive early.  Enjoy the show!

A look ahead...    The Fresno State competition will be an exciting
performance opportunity for the band and colorguard to compete in a huge college stadium in front of many of the same judges who will see them at WBA championships in November.  Given the location, it is a long day for the band.  Check the website on Sunday for a complete itinerary.  For planning purposes, the band practices from 9-12:15, will shower and change at school and load the buses at 1:45.  The band performs at 8:45 pm and will return at 2:15 am.  A late night (early morning!), but one I'm certain will be an experience to remember.  Worried about homework?  Have
your child use some of the 3 hour drive down to get caught up on their studies.

Financial update

Here is a summary of the financial update presented at Monday's AFM general membership meeting. As we communicated last month, we got off to a slower start this year than in years past. Recently, we have seen an uptick in member contributions. THANK YOU!

At present we are still about $35k short of our fall fundraising goal which is needed to support the roughly $240k budget for the fall marching band season. Now we know some of you plan to give your full Fair Share Contribution (FSC) over the course of the entire year and that is fine. David Harford, our treasurer, has forecast based on last year's pattern that we will have a deficit of $15k-$20k, assuming that the winter programs do not also run a deficit. Fortunately, due to the prudence of previous boards, this projected deficit, while large, will not completely deplete our reserves.

So, while we have made good progress we still need EVERYONE's help in reaching our financial goal. The parent community has always been supportive of what Mr. Grantham has been building for the last ten years and we fully expect that to continue. Clearly, this level of deficit cannot be sustained by the organization indefinitely. If we cannot raise enough funds to support the current program needs, Mr. Grantham and the board will have to take that into account when planning for the future.

We need your help! If you have not donated your FSC for this season and are able to do so we encourage you to send a check or use PayPal today. If you would prefer to pay throughout the year please let David Harford know so that he can factor your contribution into our planning. We can even send you a monthly reminder if you would like. Do you work for a corporation that matches gifts to the arts? If so, your FSC should be eligible - talk to your HR department. Many families make extensive use of the Scrip and eScrip programs to leverage their normal spending to create contributions to AFM. (See the Fundraising for how that works.) You can also work at the AFM concession stand at Sleeptrain or Concord Pavilion and have those monies donated to AFM. (contact Steve Worth for details.) If you know of corporate programs or grants, please let us know. And if you have other ideas about fund raising, we want to hear them.

Bottom line - we need EVERYONE's help to make this year's program a success. Let's support our kids and our award winning band program! Thank you.
