A Word from Mr. Grantham

I hope this note finds you resting and enjoying your summer.  I am looking forward to another incredible year with the Amador music program.  Coming up soonest is the start of our marching band season.  This year, the Amador band is breaking records with its membership as we expect to be over 250 strong.  It continues to be an exciting time to be a Don!

If you aren't hearing any musical sounds at home, feel free to give your child a gentle nudge so that everyone is good shape coming into the first days of band camp.  Please remember to check the website often for all calendar and schedule information and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.  I will be checking email over the summer, but please do not expect an immediate response.

Though summer vacation has just started, I am already looking ahead with anticipation and enthusiasm as we welcome a record number of "rookies" to the band program and certainly, to the parent community!

Take care and be well,

Mr. Grantham

A Word from Mr. Aubel

Next year looks to be one of our best ever!   Thanks to past-president Marilyn Palowitch and the AFM leadership, we were able to get the 7 period day back for our ALL orchestra students, Wind Ensemble I and freshman choir and band students.  Our numbers look great with the orchestra increasing by 35 students and the choirs increasing by 25!

An additional festival we will be attending next year is the CMEA Orchestra Festival. We also hope to have some students audition for the CODA Winter Honor Orchestra and the CODA  All-State Orchestra. We will continue to attend the CMEA Choral Festival and 3 jazz festivals including the Folsom Jazz Festival, where we are the two-time defending champion in the 4A Division.

Our Spring Tour will be smaller this year with a 3-day L.A. trip planned for April 13-15, at the end of spring break. More info to come in September including what we are going to do for our Spring Musical! I am looking forward to seeing you all in a few months.

Have a great summer!

Mr. Aubel

A Discussion of "Fair Share Contributions" for Band

What is a Fair Share Contribution?   A Fair Share Contribution - or FSC - is requested for each student participating in the various band, guard, and percussion ensembles.

Wasn't this once called a "fee?" The new naming - Fair Share Contribution (FSC) - is a response to PUSD direction; it is a better description of the purpose for the request for a contribution to programs where all expenses are shared by participating students, such as music and sports.

Has anything else changed?  No. This is simply a name change. AFM continues to depend on the contributions of members for the support of the terrific music programs at Amador.  It remains that if we do not collect sufficient contributions to cover expenses, over time the band programs would naturally have to sacrifice elements in order to keep a realistic financial prospective; overall, the ability for the music program to continue with its current quality or configuration of events depends on a strong and consistent commitment to the Fair Share Contribution.

How it the FSC determined? Together with the music directors, the AFM board details an expense budget for Core (general expenses for all ensembles), Marching Band and Colorguard, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Winter Programs (Guard and Percussion).  The expenses for each ensemble and Core are amortized across the number of participants per ensemble, resulting in a per student FSC.

Can my student still participate if our family is unable to contribute the FSC?  Yes!  Students should participate, regardless of ability to contribute; this has been and continues to be the policy of PUSD and AFM.

Can I fund-raise for my student's FSC?  Yes.  Various fundraisers are offered year-round which can directly contribute towards your student's FSC:  SCRIP, eScrip, program sales at the Scottish Games, beverage sales at Concord and Shoreline Pavillions.  These programs are described at the AFM website.

What is the FSC for my student for 2011-2012?

Core + Marching Band:   $980       (all marching band &colorguard)
Concert Bands:                 $35
Jazz Bands:                        $45
Winter Programs:            $615        ( includes championship trip )

The FSC's include all expenses shared by all students, and include components such as additional teaching staff, transportation, lodging, some meals, equipment repair, show design and consultation, music and arranging, among other items.

Additional and separate expenses (not included in the FSC) may include (as needed):  marching shoes, formal attire (WEI and WEII), optional ear plugs, some meals.

When should I contribute?  You will be contacted by the AFM Treasurer with a statement listing the Fair Share Contributions for your student, and any recorded fundraising contributions.  While timely contributions assist the cash flow of AFM, extended installment contributions are easily accommodated.

A final word: The AFM board is committed to the vision of the music directors.  We are equally committed to keeping expenses as low as possible while fulfilling this vision.  And all students are welcome to participate, regardless of ability to contribute to an FSC.  We trust in the stewardship of each generation of music families to continue the tradition of excellent music education at Amador Valley High School.

AFM members are encouraged to attend regularly scheduled AFM Board Meetings and All-Member Meetings to learn more about the Amador Friends of Music's mission and activities.

Sit down, strap in, and hang on - next year looks like a great ride...

I am looking forward to taking the reins from Marilyn as we head into this next exciting year for AFM. As you can see from the notes from our directors, next year is shaping up to be incredibly exciting year in the life of our student musicians. All our groups will increase in numbers significantly over this past year thanks to great support from the AVHS administration as well as the board and administration of PUSD. If you run into any of them over the summer, be sure to say "Thank you".

We are excited with the recent WBA announcement that championships will be in Santa Barbara. The marching band and colorguard will be travelling from Friday, Nov 18 through Monday, November 21.  Parents and families are encouraged to join the "Sea of Purple" at championships and throughout the season at all of the competitions.

The entirety of the new board has already begun thinking about next year. We will be working together over the summer to get a jump on our programs and make sure that AFM does all that we can to support Music Education at Amador. If you have any questions about any of this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact any of us by email or phone - see the web site for contact information.

Have a great summer!

Steve Kirch
