The excitement is building!

Our 2011 Winter Percussion and Winterguard Shows are only 10 days away!

The adult and student volunteers are in place-Thank you in advance to everyone that has committed to help with this event.

We still need the help from AFM community with the following items:

-Donate-baked goods for the Bake Sale

-Donate-baked potatoes for the concession stand

-Monetary donations to help purchase supplies

-Last but not least!! Pop-up Cabanas.  If you are willing to lend a pop-up that would be wonderful.   If the weather is nice we need the use of 3. In the event of rain we need as many as we can get our hands on!  I am hoping that if we are prepared for rain, the weather will be beautiful.

Details on where to drop off food and pop-ups will appear in next week's newsletter.

If you plan to attend the show, Percussion Units begin at 1:00pm and Winterguard Units begin at 5:16pm.

Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you,

Beth Foort

Earn money for your student's band account!!

green dollar signs

It is that time of year again to find some new and old band parents to work the Beer hut at Sleeptrain Pavillion this summer. It is a great way to raise some money for your students account.

The Band gets a percentage of sales for each event and that is divided between the parents working that event. On average a parent can make $70-$100 an event that will go to their student's Amador Band account.  Concerts start late spring and usually go till September. New parents will need to go through a T.I.P.S training class at the Pavilion before they can work.

Contact Steve Worth for any further information.

Class sign-ups

Class sign-ups    With the time to sign up for classes right around the corner, I do hope each student is considering continuing with the band program next year.  Our excellence is built on the continued growth and development of new AND returning students.  With the possibility of a 7 period day returning next year, academic pressures will hopefully be eased as students are able to fit an additional class in their schedules if they wish.  Numerious studies have shown that continued enrollment in band (music) helps support strong academic achievement and aids in students
making positive lifestyle choices regarding things like drugs and alcohol. Our program is a model for many around the state and I look forward to working with each of you again next school year.

What to sign up for?
-Students who will be in 10th or 11th grade are to sign up for the
Marching Band (PE)/Wind Ensemble if they are currently enrolled in a Wind Ensemble course.
-Students who will be in 10th or 11th grade are to sign up for the
Marching Band (PE)/Symphonic Band if they are currently enrolled in Wind Symphony or Symphonic Band.
-Students
who will be in 12th grade are to sign up for the Wind Ensemble (P) if they are currently in a Wind Ensemble course or the Symphonic Band (P) if they are currently in Wind Symphony.
-Students who will be in the 9th grade are to sign up for Symphonic Band (P).

-Any student planning on auditioning for either Jazz A or Jazz B should sign up for either course.  Students will be placed in the correct section after auditions (May, dates TBA)
-Auditions for Wind Ensemble will be after spring break (dates TBA).  Students who sign up for Symphonic Band in some form now WILL be placed in Wind Ensemble after auditions.  The students do not need to make that change with the counseling office.

2 important announcements regarding the AFM Board

I am pleased to announce Sally Baker, Magic of Music Chairperson, has been appointed to the AFM Board in January 2011.  Previously unfilled, her voting position is one of 4 member-at-large roles, which are appointed at the discretion of the executive board.  Sally brings to the board her experience as an AFM volunteer across several ensembles; her daughters participate collectively in band, guard and choir.  Sally and the MoM committee have been working since the summer on plans for another fantastic Magic of Music - American Bandstand style - on April 30.  I know you join me in thanking Sally for accepting the position!

2011 Nominating Committee has been appointed.  At the January 2011 General Membership Meeting, a Nominating Committee - comprised of Ellen McGraw, Terrie Bovaird, and Marianne Swailles - was approved by the General Membership.  This committee of volunteers is assigned the task of identifying potential candidates for the 2011-2012 Executive Committee, of which the positions are President, 1st Vice-President (Fundraising), 2nd Vice-President (Transportation and Logistics), Treasurer and Secretary.  The election will be held at the May 2011 All Members Meeting.

If you are interested in a Board Position, please take the time to learn more by meeting with current members of the board, Mr. Grantham or Mr. Aubel, or any one of the Nominating Committee members

In the last few years, the AFM Board has worked diligently and made great progress in areas of the Treasury, communication and fundraising.  The key areas of the operating year - e.g. RAs, RWs, and festivals - will have returning leaders.  The 2010-2011 Board will enjoy this solid foundation and be afforded the opportunity to develop new ideas for growth - and to help plan a trip to London!   It is time for some new leaders to "pay-it-forward" for the next generation of music students at Amador.  Are you someone who can contribute as a Board Member?  Not sure?  Find out!  Link to AFM Contacts or Link to Faculty Contacts, and setup some time with a faculty member or board member to ask questions.

36th CAMPANA JAZZ FESTIVAL

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 8 AM TO 7 PM

The 2011 Campana Jazz Festival promises to be one of the best ever, with 51 ensembles and 4 stages, all on the Amador campus.  There will be middle schools and high schools performing in Combo, Big Band, and Vocal Divisions, and more than $10,000 in summer camp scholarships to be awarded.

All AFM members and their families are encouraged to attend this great day of music - a celebration of jazz and music education!  Admission is $10; $8 for senior and students; and free for 5 and under; and best of all, it is FREE FOR VOLUNTEERS.

Volunteers are still needed:

Jazz parents - if you haven't already, please respond to your invitation to volunteer.  This is a great opportunity to meet other Jazz parents and be involved in the Campana community.  Campana is known as one of the most hospitable jazz festivals in northern California, and credit it given to a great team of parent and student volunteers.

Not a Jazz parent? You are sincerely and most enthusiastically encouraged to volunteer as well.  Read on for a special assignment  - just for you!

Jazz Parents need a little help from not-Jazz Parents at Campana

The Campana Festival needs a small handful of not-Jazz Parents to "sub-in" for Jazz parents when they need a break to see their students perform, during the following times on 2/12.

 7:45 am to 8:45 am

10:00 am to 11:00 am

12:50 pm to 1:50 pm

 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

All of these shifts are only 1-2 hours, and the tasks are simple: from helping students at a ticket table to sitting in instrument storage - just keeping an eye on things.

To say THANK YOU, you will receive FREE ADMISSION to the Campana Jazz Festival (a $10 value) which gains you entry to the entire day's performances and awards concerts!

Ready to put your hand up for Campana?  Email Marilyn and thanks for saying "How Can I Help?"
