Is there a future Grubmaster out there?

I would like to say thank you again to all the hands that came together and helped make our WBA and Senior Dinner a success.  I think the kids enjoyed themselves.  I would also like to send a BIG thank you to Marilyn Palowitch for working magic and getthing us the Fresno school site so that it was possible to be indoors!  Made our jobs so much easier.  Since my daughter will be a senior next year, I'm looking for a parent interested in learning the ropes and tagging along for the ride next season.  Please send an email to Leanna Olberg if you are interested.

On the lookout....

The Winterguard and Winter Percussion programs have outgrown the band room and need bigger indoor space for rehearsals.  Since the AVHS gymnasiums are commonly used for sports programs throughout the year, Mr. Grantham and AFM are on the lookout for indoor space within the community which our "winter" staff and students may use for rehearsals.  Ideally, the indoor space would have floor dimensions of about 50' x 90', with a high ceiling (necessary for tossing props).  Do you know of such a space in Pleasanton or close by?  It could be another school, a church facility, or even warehouse space.  Please help.  Make some calls, and if you have a good lead, please share contact information with Mr. Grantham or Marilyn Palowitch.  THANK YOU!

Do you shop at Gene's? Earn $$$ for AFM!
Gene's Fine Foods is running a contest starting Dec 1, 2010 and running through May 15, 2011. The school organization that spends the most money at Gene's during this time wins $1000 (with $500 for 2nd and $250 for 3rd). When you shop there, just tell the cashier that you're with AFM and they will keep track for us. They'll even post the running totals on their window. You can get your friends and family to help too. Just have them mention AFM at check-out and we'll get credit for it. Not only that, but you can "double-dip". If you buy Gene's scrip, you'll get the customary credit directly in your student account plus the amount you spend counts toward the contest. Finally, they're increasing the amount of scrip rebate in Jan and Feb to 8%. Such a deal!

AVHS Winter Banquet
Friday, December 5th

The banquet is to celebrate a great season of marching band with awards both voted by the band and from section leaders.  Mr. G, AFM members, and staff members will also speak about the season.  All marching band students are HIGHLY encouraged to come, and we also invite parents to tag along and enjoy the night as well.  The attire is formal (girls: homecoming dress like; guys: dress shirt and dress pants).  This year, we will be having a potluck, where each section will be assigned to bring food for everyone else.  Here is the list:

Battery  / Pit / Colorguard = desserts (brownies, cookies, etc.)

Flutes / Clarinets = Drinks (please bring individual cans of soda, juice, water, etc.; no big gallon bottles)

Trumpets / Trombones / Tubas / Mellophones / Bass Clarinets / Bari, Tenor, and Alto Saxophones = finger foods (examples: taquitos, bagel bites, chicken nuggets, pizza rolls, chips (potato), veggie trays + dip, fruit trays, sandwich trays (costco), egg rolls, etc. - something you don't have to eat with utensils)

We strongly encourage a wide diversity of food and drink!  We suggest that the portions of food should be able to feed 10 people.

AVHS Winter Percussion and Winterguard Show
Saturday, February 5, 2011

Winter Guard picAlthough the Winter Percussion and Winterguard seasons have just begun, plans are well underway for the AVHS Winter Percussion and Winterguard Show on Saturday, February 5, 2011.

AVHS will host Winter Percussion and Winterguard units from all over Northern California for an exciting day of competition.  Rumor has it that our competition has the best Judge's Room food, and well fed, happy judges are always a good thing!
While participation by the Winter Percussion and Winterguard families is required, all members of the AFM Community are encouraged to participate and attend, to ensure that this event continues the tradition of a high standard.

2011 Sneak Peek

AFM Message from the PresidentDear AFM Families  - If you are like me, surprises are best when they come in boxes with bows.  Other kinds of surprises can be downright stressful.  With that in mind, please take a moment with me to "look ahead" into the year 2011 - so you won't be surprised!  Three significant AFM events happen in the second semester:  The AVHS Winter Percussion and Winterguard Show on February 5th, the Campana Jazz Festival on February 12th, and the Magic of Music on April 30th.  Each one of these celebrations are in support of music education - the first two, hosting hundreds of students from other schools in performance and competition, and the Magic of Music - our grand dinner, dance and auction to raise funds for capital expenditures.

Winterguard and Winter percussion parents are all asked to help at the Wintershow, and all Jazz parents are asked to volunteer for Campana.  However, each of these festivals is too big for these groups to handle alone, and so all AFM families are encouraged and invited to put your hands up high and volunteer to help when and where you can at these events.

As for the Magic of Music - this is a year-long project, and Chairperson Sally Baker is on target for a fabulous event on April 30.  Please plan to help - many different talents are needed on small teams working on donations, decorations, live auction, silent auction, etc.

And on the main stage, our students!  Yes, the music continues, but changes as we move into the second semester.  Concert bands, jazz bands, choir and orchestra take the stages, honor bands are chosen and play, guard and percussion move indoors, festivals happen, and the beat goes on, and the beat goes on, na na na na na na na na na, all .... sorry, that was my life soundtrack going off again.  Well, thanks for taking this sneak peek with me at the second semester.

One last thing you can do before you turn your attention to your hearth and home - reach out to one of the three event Chairs - Beth Foort for Wintershow, Marilyn Palowitch for Campana or Sally Baker for Magic of Music - and send an email, now, to give us some peace of mind that 2011 will arrive with the kind of help that would make Santa jealous.  Subject line:   How Can I Help?

Thanks for reading, Marilyn Palowitch
