Do you shop at Gene's? Earn $$$ for AFM!
Gene's Fine Foods is running a contest starting Dec 1, 2010 and running through May 15, 2011. The school organization that spends the most money at Gene's during this time wins $1000 (with $500 for 2nd and $250 for 3rd). When you shop there, just tell the cashier that you're with AFM and they will keep track for us. They'll even post the running totals on their window. You can get your friends and family to help too. Just have them mention AFM at check-out and we'll get credit for it. Not only that, but you can "double-dip". If you buy Gene's scrip, you'll get the customary credit directly in your student account plus the amount you spend counts toward the contest. Finally, they're increasing the amount of scrip rebate in Jan and Feb to 8%. Such a deal!

 Big Savings on Scrip!

November and December are the months to maximize your Scrip returns.  AFM will credit your student's account with 100% of your rebate in these big shopping months (instead of the usual 75%).  It's a great way to save while you shop!  Learn more about the AFM Scrip Purchase Program at the Amador music website. The deadlines for Scrip Orders (with Payments) are the 1st and the 15th of each month.

Please note that  "Yolatea" off of Division Street  jointed our group of local vendors. Aside from frozen yogurt they offer gelato, crepes and boba tea. Their contribution to scrip is 10%.

OH WHAT A NIGHT!

I am still enjoying the afterglow of a memorable finish  to our season at WBA championships.  It was a weekend of firsts for the band and we should all be so proud of our organization for everything we have done together to make this band what it is.  Thanks aren't enough, but thank you for your support as students, parents and families.  Amador's music program is truly a diamond in our state!  Thanks for helping us shine bright!

Parade information: Report time for the students is 3:30 in full uniform plus a Santa hat in place of the shako and plume.  The parade steps off at 5:00 and students will be done by 6:30, if not earlier.  Drop off and pick up at Amador should happen in the Del Valle lot behind the school.  Main Street will be closed.

Ushers needed for Winter Concert If you are able to help usher at the band concert on Tuesday 12/14, please e-mail me with your interest.  You get to see the concert and responsibilities are minimal.  There is a brief volunteer training at the theater the night of the concert at 6:15.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Concert date change    As you are likely already aware, due to conflicts with the theater schedule we were asked to move our concert to Tuesday 12/14.  I apologize for any inconvenience but please know changes like this are only made when absolutely necessary.  Circumstances beyond our control resulted in the move of date.  Thanks for your understanding.

Amador music students earn national accolades!
Congrats to senior clarinetist Kathy Yuh on earning a spot in the Music for All/Bands Of America Honor Band of America and to junior trombonist Chris Palowitch for earning a spot in the Grammy All-Stars Jazz Band.  Both of these groups are selected by audition from the top high school musicians in the country and are considered highly prestigious opportunities for the students involved.  Again, congratulations to Kathy and Chris!

Jon Grantham
Director of Bands
Winterguard and Winter Percussion Ensembles Looking for New Members!
Participation fee/contribution greatly reduced for 2010-11!

Winter Percussion pic
The Winterguard and Winter Percussion ensembles are about to begin rehearsals for their indoor season, a very exciting presentation of competition and performance.  While students who participate in Winterguard and Winter Percussion are often from the
Colorguard and Percussion units of the Marching Band, they are also joined by other band (and non-band) students who may use these ensembles as an opportunity to explore something NEW! If your band student has been wondering what guard would be like - winterguard is a great place to learn!  Got a horn player who might like a turn on the pit instruments or percussion?  Winter Percussion is the place!  Worried about the expense?  Don't be!  The participation fee (covers costs) for the winterguard 2009Winter Programs has been reduced to $425. (In 2009-10 it was $700.)  And as always, all students may participate without bias to a family's ability to pay.  If your student has interest in these programs, please tell her/him to see Mr. Grantham.  We hope to see many new members this season!
Congratulations and Appreciations!

AFM Message from the President

Congratulations to Mr. Grantham, the marching band Staff Members, especially the Students of the 2010 Marching Dons!  The Amador Friends of Music is proud to support you, and thrilled for your historic, record placement and score at the WBA 4A/5A Championships!  Your excellence in performance was nicely rewarded, and Pleasanton will always be proud of you as ambassadors of our city and school district.

And to all you amazing Volunteers!  We have arrived at the first (and not the last) point in the year where thanks are overflowing and it's impossible to thank everyone by name, but thanks and appreciations are required.  How could there be such a wonderful marching band season without the ensemble of Road Warriors, RA's, Uniform Coordinators, Grub Crew, Communications Editors and AFM Board Members who work seamlessly behind the scenes?  If you setup a chair, squirted a water bottle, loaded a truck, drove a truck, sewed a flag, donated licorice, owned the "right speaker", stuck in a plume, announced good news, wore purple, served food, cleaned up, planned for rain, brought a snack, wrote a check, bought a yard sign, stayed up all night, road a bus with 50 teenagers..OK, this is as endless as naming names.   Everyone of you  - and what you did - is appreciated.  I give thanks and praise for the volunteers of AFM each and every day.  Thank you one and all!

And a final salute to the Volunteer leads. Head Road Warrior - Rich McManus, Head RA - Jody Harcourt, Head RA's Front Line - Brian and Karen Fletcher, Grubmaster - Leanna Olberg, Uniforms - Karalene Rasmussen, Hotel Coordinator - Emily Yim.  Job well done!

Marilyn Palowitch

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Thank you to everyone who helped with all phases of the senior luncheon!  From those who helped take pictures during the season, to those who donated pictures, organized pictures,  helped with assembly, created the DVD, made the chocolates, transported and arranged the music stands, decorated the tables, hung the banner, got the balloons blown up, displayed the group pictures, poured the cider, decorated the senior cake, handed out the bags, and helped to disassemble at the end - we couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you also to Marilyn Palowitch, who secured a great indoor space for our luncheon, Leanna Olberg who made sure everyone was well fed, and Mr. Grantham, for leading a program that meant so much to each senior.

Congratulations to the marching class of 2011!

Nalanda Bowman and Debbie McManus

EDITOR'S Note: A huge thank you to Nalanda and Debbie for the Wonderful job they did organizing a fabulous Senior Farewell!

Corporate Gifts - Matching Grants and Volunteer Hours

You may be surprised, but AFM received more than six thousand dollars in corporate gifts last year which we used to help purchase capital equipment for the music ensembles. We'd like to do even better this year. Do you work for a corporation or have a connection to a foundation that matches donations to arts or educational institutions? Some companies (for example: IBM, Oracle, AT&T, Chevron and Clorox) match charitable giving by their employees. Other companies (we know of Intel and Clorox) will make a donation if their employees volunteer their time. For example, this year, as an Intel employee, I get to count time as a Road Warrior (chaperone), as a Board member and even as part of the Magic of Music organizing committee. I have accumulated almost 50 hours of volunteer time and at $10/hour, that amounts to almost $500 for AFM. But, I have to submit all my hours by the end of the year in order for AFM to receive these funds. Does your company have a matching gifts or volunteer hours program? Please contact your HR department to find out - and if you need support to establish AFM as a gift recipient with your company, I'm here to help! Typically these programs will run on the company fiscal year, so there may be a deadline coming soon. Thanks again for all you do for our kids.
