August 2012

Hi  !

As usual it seems like the Europeans are taking more time off than those of us on this side of the pond.  Hmm - is that why the US is now considered the center of the mobile universe?  What do YOU think?  At some point or another, all of the WIPsters are taking some time off in August to do a variety of activities from sipping wine in Sonoma, touring DC and NYC, kayaking in the Gulf Islands, exploring Vancouver Island, visiting Turkey and fishing in England.  Can you guess who is doing what?

It so nice to see the stats from Flurry that showed more developers are making money, and that a 'middle class' is burgeoning.  I heard a great story out of Montreal this week where a couple of young fellows set out to create an app with a goal of making 80k, and did so in the first four hours! Check out the YouTube video of Pico Battle.  We need to track them down to find out their secret sauce - was it their creativity, revenue model, or are we at a place where users are willing to take risks to try a variety of new and different apps.

We are also seeing a shift from the so called "long tail" or "garage" developers, to those in the enterprise space from insurance to manufacturing, looking for answers to build great apps for their companies.  I think many of us who have been in the industry for a while (some recent 'veterans' consider themselves old timers if they have been in the industry for 5 years!) forget all of the knowledge we have built up in regards to the nuances of wireless and all of the great services and tools out there.  Let continue to spread the word so the newcomers spend their time on creativity and focused business objectives, rather than reinventing the wheel.

Three cool things I like this month that are supporting developers are:

  1. Released this week by inneractive, the Mobile Monetization Global Landscape Map - a great resource.
  2. Newly lauched AppBoy, see article below, for CRM.
  3. The open source ARO tool from AT&T that gives you feedback to optimize your app so it doesn't suck up your users' battery or chew up data time - invaluable!

Happy Summer!

Best, Caroline

MAE App Planet Developer Spotlight is a WIP blog series, where we feature mobile developers we've met and get the latest scoop on what's up with them. If you would like to be featured in the next developer spotlight, email Sam with your story!

Sebastian Brannstrom is Lead Engineer for Lyft in San Francisco and is responsible for building and maintaining the Lyft real-time ridesharing service, including backend, iOS and Android clients. While trying to balance the needs of product design, business development and engineering, and he often wishes there were more hours in a day and more days in a week.

Tell us a little about yourself:

Originally from Stockholm, I've been programming since my teens. I fell into mobile in 2006 when I got my first Symbian phone. It couldn't do podcasts, so I had to write an app for that. I made it open source, and when Symbian itself went open source, I was hired by them...

Last call to contribute to the 2nd Edition of the Mobile Developer's Guide to the Parallel Universe

The 1st Edition was a big success in providing marketing tips to developers about getting their applications to market and extending its lifespan. It is a companion guide to the Mobile Developer's Guide to the Galaxy, in its 10th Edition.

Submission Deadline: Tuesday August 7, 2012.

We expect to have the 2nd edition published in early September As with the 1st Guide and Guide to the Galaxy, this is an open sourced / community collaboration project. We are seeking sponsorship to offset the printing costs.

At WIPJams, it's usually all systems go, so it's not uncommon for WIPsters to miss a meal or three. Here's a sneak shot of Teresa trying to grab a bite for her only meal of the day while running the WIPJam at MMM last week. Anyone venture a guess what she's eating?
