June 2012

Hi  !

I've talked a lot lately about the frothy times our market is in.  Now that mobile is almost ubiquitous and is still outpacing all market sectors, it makes sense that businesses want to 'go mobile', or find ways to become mobile and exploit the market opportunities. From that we see the explosion of smartphones (over $1B to be sold in 2014) and applications (Android apps alone are being downloaded at 1 Billion per month) and the continuing demand for mobile developers.  Check out the cool infographic Mobile Storm in a Cloud that Engineyard recently published that showcases these stats and more.

That frothy view is also looking cloudy, led by the explosive growth of APIs.  Everyone 'must have' an API strategy according to a recent presentation by the folks at Programmable Web which now tracks 6000 APIs!  With the exposure of APIs, comes the need to find the best cloud solutions to manage the data from both edges of the API equation - the 'exposer' and developer.  WIP has advocated for some time that developers MUST have a data strategy and resources dedicated to data management, integrated into their development plan.

Here's where we see a big gap in all of this.  Too many providers are spending big dollars jumping on the API bandwagon, but are taking a 'build it and they will come' approach, and it's not working.  We are seeing this in network, device, content and tools - no one has been immune.  Technology is the enabler but not the solution.  Without a dedicated strategy and ongoing program to recruit developers, coupled with the proper support structure, the true value of APIs are not being realized.  I am hopeful of the some of the enabler tools (like Viafo) coming on stream to make development and connections to the APIs easier for less experienced developers, particularly the web crowd which is coming up strongly. But I predict we will see many API programs mothballed over the next few years, victims of an enthusiastic technology spend that missed the complete community strategy to go with it.  WIP of course is here to offer community building services, and at least push the right buttons of awareness of the issue and educating developers on how they can be the best they can be!

Best, Caroline

The WIP Demo Lounge is coming to San Francisco, June 27 & 28, as a Google I/O Extended event next door to the Moscone,  It will be a cool place to check out demos and hang with cooler people and see if you get 'shamed or famed'.  More details coming next week.

I bumped into the boys from Base 2 Apps, big winners of our Muther! of all hackathons June 2011, showcasing their Vibe App (Immersion haptic technology), and their CTIA APP, in their CTIA booth in New Orleans (part of the Muther! prize package).  Nice closure!

Chris has been writing mobile software in various forms since 2003. He was involved in several large-scale Brew projects, from MMS messaging to Major League Baseball. More recently, he was an early Android engineer behind the doubleTwist media player and is now the lead Android developer for Tumblr. He's recently published "Creating Android Applications." with PeachPit Press. He lives in Manhattan, where he constantly debates shaving his beard. You can reach him on twitter @haseman.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I've been writing software that lives on mobile phones since they switched from black-and-white to color.  I'm a recent, if reluctant, New Yorker, and I already can't stand people who walk slowly 3 abreast on a crowded sidewalk.  I build mobile applications with an eye towards pixel perfection and I'm not very good at sitting still.

in-app-webinarIn-app purchases are overtaking paid downloads as the biggest source of app revenues. Consumers have a higher willingness to download free apps than paid ones, and the lifetime value of a user isn't capped with in-app purchases, as it is with paid downloads. For developers who can successfully utilize the model, in-app purchasing can significantly increase their earnings and success.

In a recent webinar, the first in a series hosted by the Verizon Developer Community, Carlo explores in-app purchasing with Sean Thompson of MobileDeluxe come along to share some of the secrets of their success with it.

Every month, WIP publishes the State of the Developer Ecosystem report, which captures the most important news and trends for mobile developer programs and features in-depth analysis of marketing and outreach strategy and tactics. This report brings you foresight on trends and developer sentiment 6-12 months before "official" reports are published, helping you stay ahead of the game and deliver tools and services that meet developers' most pressing and immediate needs. Best of all, you can now buy individual copies or bundles directly from our WIPFactory.com site.

Each report features:
  • An in-depth article on a key developer marketing topic, such as the cost of developer acquisition, the Payment API competitive landscape, developer segmentation, and more
  • Event summaries from the many events attended by the WIP team each month, capturing the zeitgeist of the developer mindset and local news and trends
  • Coverage of local and regional developer hubs around the world, and the hot developers in them
  • the WIPBuzz section, where we share overheard developer sentiment collected from our travels and contacts.
The WIP monthly report is a must-read for every mobile developer program or resource provider. It will give you information and knowledge to get ahead of the pack of companies fighting for developer mindshare, to better engage and connect with developers and to bring them to your program.
