At WIP, we are getting set to help launch the GSMA OneAPI Gateway Initiative across Canada with a number of events. Plans are well underway for a WIPJam/Muther! of all Hackathons taking place Michigan at the end of July. Check out the ESNC North America Challenge. There are great prizes to be won and idea submission is FREE. We will be back at droidcon UK in October - Call for Papers opens May 22. Information below on these and more activities. The folks over at GSMA have offered a number of FREE passes for qualified developers to Mobile Asia Expo (MAE) and App Planet. See below to find out how you can secure one of these passes.  BlackBerry 10 Jam May 1 - 3, 2012, Orlando, FL

Developers got lots of attention during the BlackBerry Jam 10 which took place along side of BlackBerry World 2012 in Orlando, FL. There were about 1000 developers at BlackBerry Jam 10. Attendees were treated to concerts, rides at Universal Studios and a developer only outdoor party. Many developers started off skeptical about BlackBerry's future, but after the keynote and sessions, most seemed to be impressed. Some developers I talked to were only upset that there were too many good sessions going on at the same time. Many were interested in building Native Apps with a Cascades UI. The BlackBerry 10 photo rewind feature was also a big hit.
Each developer at BlackBerry Jam 10 received a 4.2 inch Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha device (touch screen keyboard) to help them build apps for BlackBerry 10 (based on QNX) which will be released later this year. Sessions were designed to get developers writing apps quickly. BlackBerry is open to Native, HTML5, and even Android apps running on the new platform. Sessions on developer tools like the Ripple Emulator plugin for Google Chrome, BlackBerry Web Works SDK, alice.js for clever animations, Sencha Touch, JQuery, and BBUI.js (BlackBerry User Interface scripts) helped developers build HTML5 apps that look like native apps. Most of the HTML5 sessions apply beyond BlackBerry like the session ran by Sencha's CTO Abe Elias or by AppendTo.com.
BlackBerry says that if you generate $1000 in revenue on your BlackBerry 10 App, they will guarantee that you will make $10,000 in revenue in the first year or they will make up the difference. The company is doing everything they can to entice developers to submit Apps to BlackBerry App World. This year could be very exciting for BlackBerry App Development.

 Mobile Convention Amsterdam, May 8, 2012, Amsterdam

800 professionals in marketing, banking, publishing and ICT & telecom gathered in the Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam to learn about mobile marketing, social media, mobile payments, augmented reality and mobile advertising in four parallel tracks: brand marketing, media & publishing, business and implementation.
The event was semi-international. Most speakers came from Dutch local companies, though the talks in the afternoon from international guests like Tom Bowman (BBC) about their multi platform approach for the Olympics and Tomi Ahonen on mobile money attracted a lot of people. Interestingly, many speakers were talking about the second screen (using a tablet or smartphone while watching TV). Also all speakers anticipated a huge opportunity for mobile marketing and advertising strategies in the near feature. Tom Eslinger (Saatchi&Saatchi) provided creative examples and inspiration while Sanoma explained about their "Mobile First" strategy. Endemol Games explained they were making good money by engaging TV audience into TV shows through mobile or online games and social media.
At the end of the show the Mobile Media & Marketing Awards were given to the Ziggo TV app, the roaming reminder of Vodafone, the mobile strategy of Air France KLM, Shell (app for investor relations) and TVGids.tv (another mobile TV Guide). These winners were selected by Dutch mobile industry gurus from approximately 75 submissions.
It was an inspiring day for business managers and marketers. For developers, the day may have been inspiring but, unfortunately, did not include any technical stuff like APIs or SDKs. |
