May 2012

Dear !

We were discussing the state of tech press with our friends at RudeBaguette and others , and it all pointed in the same direction... The tech space (and especially mobile) looks more and more like a People's Magazine.... rumors, scandal, impassioned lawsuits, swapping couples, stellar successes and fantastic crashes down to criminal court...

Not convinced? Here's a take on this month's news!

  • Instagram employees worth $78M [more]
  • Samsung (and HP) at the top of the charts!  [more] [more]
  • Microsoft reveals new date: Barnes and Nobles [more]
  • Blackberry spotted with a Qt device at BB10 [more]
  • Google & Paypal go to EC court for their mobile money [more]
  • Dalvik parternity scandal rages on [more]
  • Revealed! DOJ vote for Apple extortion trial [more]

And on the WIP front:

And we have to finish off with a competition!

I will be moderating a panel on HTML5 at Open Mobile Summit and am looking for HTML5 stories. Have you recently coded something in HTML5? Or used a neat tool? Ported your app cross platform? Or even how you have monetized and distributed your HTML5 product - we want to hear about all of it!

To make things fun and worthwhile, we'll offer a special present to the best HTML5 story we receive!

Get ready to hit the reply button!!!

Since you read our newsletters, you probably know there's more to WIP than just our great WIPJams, our web site and all our developer activities. We offer a whole set of Developer Marketing Agency services, which we've now put under a new brand: the WIP Factory. The Factory is where we build mobile developer communities. We work with developer programs and tool and resource providers to help them reach mobile developers -- and to make sure they're offering developers the things they want and need, and doing it the right way.

The WIP Factory is built on three key pillars:

  • Our team's experience of working with mobile developers for so many years through WIP and other groups.
  • Our creative approach to developer outreach and marketing -- the same creative thinking behind our WIPJams and everything else we do.
  • Our global presence and connections with developers and local groups around the world.
Whether it's strategic consulting, tactical outreach plans, running a hackathon or scouting and introductions, we can help. Check out the WIP Factory site for more info on how we can help and some of our past work. Let us put the Factory in motion for you!

Wireless Healthcare Asia In-app purchases are blowing up, and now account for more than 70% of the revenues in the iTunes App Store, and account for a huge and growing chunk of revenues on other platforms as well. Business models with in-app purchasing (such as freemium, virtual goods and more) work a bit differently than paid downloads, and require you to design your app differently to get the best conversion rate and accrue the most revenues. There's a premium on lifecycle planning and management so you can keep your revenue streams alive and continually offer new value to your users in exchange for continued purchases.

Want to learn more? Join Carlo as he moderates a webinar hosted by the Verizon Developer Community that will cover in-app purchasing and get you everything you need to know to get going with it in your apps.

We'll cover:

  • how to align your app design with in-app purchasing business models
  • how to maximize your conversions and revenues
  • best practices for implementing in-app purchasing
  • tips and lessons learned from fellow developers
  • and more!

Register now for the webinar, on Thursday May 17 from 2-3:30pm EST. If you can't make it, don't worry, we'll record it and make it available to you!

APIs: Here's Where It Gets Interesting!   It's the Year of the API - they're everywhere, including from the carriers, most of whom now provide developers with access to their network through various APIs. Where things get really interesting is the 'cross carrier plays' - more access, easier development, less paperwork. Find out and meet the teams behind the commercial launch in Canada of OneAPI. Stay tuned for more information on OneAPI events happening across Canada.

Every month, WIP publishes the State of the Developer Ecosystem report, which captures the most important news and trends for mobile developer programs and features in-depth analysis of marketing and outreach strategy and tactics. This report brings you foresight on trends and developer sentiment 6-12 months before "official" reports are published, helping you stay ahead of the game and deliver tools and services that meet developers' most pressing and immediate needs. Best of all, you can now buy individual copies or bundles directly from our WIPFactory.com site.

Each report features:
  • An in-depth article on a key developer marketing topic, such as the cost of developer acquisition, the Payment API competitive landscape, developer segmentation, and more
  • Event summaries from the many events attended by the WIP team each month, capturing the zeitgeist of the developer mindset and local news and trends
  • Coverage of local and regional developer hubs around the world, and the hot developers in them
  • the WIPBuzz section, where we share overheard developer sentiment collected from our travels and contacts.
The WIP monthly report is a must-read for every mobile developer program or resource provider. It will give you information and knowledge to get ahead of the pack of companies fighting for developer mindshare, to better engage and connect with developers and to bring them to your program. Grab your copy now!
