Dear !
I'm sure glad spring is here. It seems to be the time when I finally have a bit more time to get a reasonable hold on my email (note I didn't say I have mastered it ), have time to take a vacation (OoO the rest of the week - yeah ), and a time to get creative on some new projects (my favorite). From the sounds of other conversations I've had this week most of you feel the same way (and a lot of you vacationing, so I hope someone is around to read our newsletter!).
Watch for information on some new WIP projects including:
- the WIP App Zone at the London Book Fair next week (we are starting to add WIP developer activities to industries outside our traditional mobile)
- We are the North American lead for the Galileo Masters Contest supported by the European Satellite Navigation Competition (if Angry Birds can go into space, so can we)
- Check out out panel at CTIA to find out what is up with OneAPI
- Mark your calendar for our newest WIPJam and Muther! Of all Hackathon location this summer in Detroit, Michigan
And always a few things up our sleeves for new ways and in new locations we can help developers do what they do better.
I'd like to say a special thanks and good luck to Harper Price-Brown who has been with us for almost 2 years. He is leaving WIP at the end of April to go back to school and determine the next leg of his career journey. He's been a great WIPster, and we will all miss him alot. I'm sure we'll have the chance to work with him in some capacity in the future.
Happy Spring!
Caroline

A Word from Harper Price-Brown, Community Coordinator @ WIP
In my last 2 years, WIP has given me some of the best experiences in my life, including learning from amazing colleagues, meeting contacts from all across the globe and the opportunity to move my life from Vancouver to London. Alas it is time for me to take my next step in furthering my education and exploring other parts of this industry. I want to thank everyone I have met at WIPjams, Droidcons, Meetups and MWCs and I look forward to crossing paths again in the future. If you wish to stay in touch please email me at harper.pricebrown@gmail.com
WIP to get involved with MOBICAP and the European Commission
At WIP we're always looking for opportunities to help mobile entrepreneurs! That's why when we were invited to participate in MOBICAP, a European Commission-backed project targetting the funding gap for early-stage mobile start-ups, we said "let's go", "c'est parti", "Los!","Vamos", "Andiamo"
Over the next couple of years we'll be launching a few intiatives around this. This year in particular, we'll be supporting the European ICT Challenge, organizing a survery of European mobile entrepreneurs and putting together a special MOBICAP session for Android innovators at Droidcon London.
The companies selected in the European ICT Challenge will have a chance to take part in the Start-Up Initiative, an international acceleration platform where start-ups get training, investor visibility, media coverage and a large network of contacts - all for free! All you need to take advantage of this unique opportunity is to apply at http://www.europeanictchallenge.com/ before Apr 30.

In early March, we had the chance to meet up with
Gary Yentin, CEO of App-Promo at WIPJam. App-Promo assists developers and app owners to succeed with their apps through providing services to increase discovery, maximize app revenue and mitigate the risk associated with new product development. We talked with Gary about how the biggest marketing issues developers face everyday and how to overcome them:
Tell us a little about your expertise and background on mobile marketing.
Our team has over 15 years of combined mobile marketing experience. We started in mobile when personalization was the big trend and everyone wanted a ringtone and wallpaper for their phone. Both Tom and I have continued to work in every facet of the industry as it has grown, becoming experts in mobile media, mobile marketing, mobile advertising and product strategy and development along the way. We leverage our years of experience and knowledge to help our clients of various sizes and vertical succeed across platforms with their apps.
How do you feel mobile marketing differs from web and traditional marketing?
App marketing definitely leverages a lot of core principles from their traditional and digital cousins but the main differences lie in the nuances of the product and the market that is specific to apps. Understanding the opportunities specific to marketing applications with media and bloggers, paid and earned media and especially within the app stores is key to maximizing the effectiveness of any campaign.

Late last week, RIM released their Q4 2012 revenue reports, and the results were extremely disappointing, to say the least. Multiple senior-level executives parted ways, along with one with the original faces of the BlackBerry brand itself - Jim Balsillie. As the news of RIM's apparent pending doom spread throughout the blogosphere, I couldn't help but wonder if this was really the beginning (or middle, depending on your level of cynicism) of the end for the Canadian tech giant. While most critics have focused on BlackBerry's revenue numbers and the downward consumer trends, there has barely been any news on what developers think of BlackBerry.
To start, both BlackBerry DevCon Europe and all the sessions at BlackBerry's ADC at Mobile World Congress were completely sold out, but was this simply due to the schwag being given away at the front door?
Surprisingly, the answer was no.
