Dear !
Big Data is the latest buzzword in tech. When I first heard it, I
thought someone said Big Daddy. And you know, there a lot of similarities! Its BIG, hard to get your arms around, and to be safe you certainly want to control it - not the other way around; which probably takes some manipulation to go beyond the surface to really understand it; and be able to gain valuable intelligence or perhaps new product innovation. Because it is so large, it is hard to keep at home; but you certainly want access to your own big data on your terms.
Get ready to hear more about big data at Mobile World Congress (just weeks away now), along with more on LTE and operator billing. Expect to see more brands there too as marketers and verticals have fallen under the mobile spell.
And I'd like to quash the rumour right now about there being no developers at MWC. Say what! That's not been our experience the last few years; and since the addition of App Planet three years ago, the developer contingent has been growing ever since. We also hear that MWC is also way above previous attendance registration to date - so be prepared for the crowds; and less ties!
Our WIPJam @MWC is in its 5th year, and we already have over 2500 registrants - a whole lot of developers. It's also our biggest yet, with more space, 18 sponsors to date, and over 50 speakers with our Storytellers, discussion groups, a hackathon, a barcamp and even technical sessions. Watch the website as we continue to roll out the details. We will be coming out with our annual
Developer's Survival Guide to MWC in about a week, that distills the must-do developer activities for the week; along with the tips about wearing comfortable shoes, being vigilant about pickpockets and packing a few Mars bars for extra energy or for that missed lunch.
The whole WIP team will be there in full force with a few announcements of our own. Let us know if you are interested in a meeting. See you soon.
Best,
Caroline

With Mobile World Congress right around the corner, there's no doubt that some of you have already thought about joining a hackathon or two during your time there. While
coding for the sake of coding can be fun, it's probably even more fun if you win so we reached out to Peter Lindgren, CEO of VISIARC, and recent hackathon winner at last year's Nokia World:
First of all, can you tell us a little bit about VISIARC?
VISIARC is a mobile cloud company that specializes in mobile documents or more specifically email, attachments and documents. Traditionally, we focus on enterprise and productivity.
You recently took home first prize for your app 'Duudle' at Nokia World's Hackathon. Can you tell us a little bit about Duudle?
Duudle is a multiplayer, turn and skill based game. The game play is original in the sense that it hasn't really been done before, yet its' actually quite straight-forward. You get a word, then you get 30 seconds to 'duudle'. Your duudle is then pushed to all opponents who get notified that it's now their turn. The duudle is replayed exactly the way you drew it. All other players shall then guess the word. The faster a player guesses the right word the more points he/she gets, as well as you.
How did you approach the hackathon from a planning and strategic point of view? Did you come up with a strategy or work plan?
We planned well, but the strategy we chose was a bit nutty. First, we spent a whole lot of time thinking of what we wanted to create, drawing on the strengths of the different skills within of our hackathon team. We thought we had a pretty solid plan. Then we decided to do all this on a platform we knew pretty much nothing about before the event: Windows Phone 7. We just figured that since there were Microsoft experts on site, we would be able to quickly work around any technical problems we might have encountered.

At the AT&T Developer Summit earlier last month, one of the free development tools they announced was the Application Resource Optimizer (ARO).
While Diagostic Tools usually don't ooze of excitement, AT&T did a good job of at least creating intrigue with Zynga and Pandora both vouching that it improved their apps in power consumption and radio communications.
When we spoke with AT&T, they called it "Wireshark on steroids". It works across all platforms and carriers and is broken into two main compenents, the Data Analyzer and the Data Collector.
Click on the image or this link for a WIP video on what AT&T had to say about it:
At the very least, we think ARO is worth giving a shot - any chance you can take to save your users' battery life, you take it!
