January 2012

Dear !

It feels like 2012 started a month or so ago, but as this is our first newsletter of the year it's still time to wish you a happy and prosperous 2012 from the whole WIP team!

And this year, it means you have one more person wishing you a

happy new year, as WIP received a nice Christmas present with

Sam Chan, our new communications coordinator, who will be based in Vancouver.

And for your (late) Christmas present we thought we'd oblige you with a set of predictions and pre-dictators!

For now, we're all in Las Vegas for the WIP yearly planning meeting, but for some cool news from the  AT&T Developer Summit and CES, I'll be playing the news reporter :

  • Nokia gets its best ever shot at the US market with the Lumia 900, its first LTE device launching on AT&T, backed up by a powerful Microsoft presence!
  • Sony shakes the Ericsson off its Sony Xperia Ion for another LTE device.
  • I was talking at MAC recently about the need for operators to make B2D clouds rather than B2C or B2B ones... it looks like AT&T listened to me with its new Cloud Architect, a cloud service geared towards developers. Acer and Lenovo,  though, didn't listen, launching 2 iCloud rivals. Let's see the results in a few months.
  • We can expect a few more Google TV announcements too, like the ICS powered Lenovo TV, giving Android developers even more options.
  • If you hadn't heard the word Ultrabook before, you will now, as it's impossible to miss the many Intel orchestrated announcements.

Sam's arrival will be more than welcome as we're gearing up for a busy 2012, judging by our event calendar and our 2012 plans (hush hush)! If you're interested in joining us feel free to pop us a note, we're always looking for new talent!

Best,

Thibaut

Looking at the amount of new Apps that are published for Apple and Android each month, we can roughly estimate a new app comes out every 1-2 minutes.  Obviously, this is a lot to compete with so developers need to keep differentiation on their mind.

There are many different ways to differentiate, but one of the most overlooked differentiators is haptic feedback. Haptics also happens to be one of the simplest and effective features to add to your Android application.

Integrating Haptics into an App

Tactile Haptic feedback is the vibration a phone creates, and now Immersion has recently released an Android SDK specifically to take advantage of these vibrations. At the moment it is the only haptic specific SDK to really control all aspects of an Android phones vibrate ability.

How is it different then Google Vibrate API?

Through the Android Vibrator API, the only functions that can be controlled are the Google () vibrate motor on/off control. For example, if you have an application where a user receives a message and all you want is for the phone to vibrate for X number of seconds, then the built-in Google API is perfect for that. But if you want to know whom the message is coming from without looking at your phone, well this is where the Immersion SDK into play.

Imagine the enhancements haptics could create for a racing game. It starts out with a soft vibrate on the left side of the phone as the left tires slip off the pavement onto the gravel, then as the driver decides to take a shortcut through a dirt road, the phone then vibrates to its full potential.  Haptics allows the user to become more engaged and adds another dimension on top of video and audio.

(Guest Post by Amit Lubovsky, Co-founder and VP of Business Development and Marketing at tawkon)

Our company tawkon is focused on radiation tracking, specifically on detecting phone radiation emission on mobile devices. Especially as mobile devices are being relied on for more and more, radiation is a growing concern among consumers. When you make calls or browse the web, your phone emits radiation in various levels, depending on your circumstances and even the model of the phone. We monitor those levels and offers suggestions for lowering them before and during calls (disclaimer: while no research on this issue has proven 100% conclusive, increasing studies are pointing to clearer risks).

Since different phone models emit different amounts of radiation, cross-platform development was essential from the get-go. We adapted a critical development strategy in order to launch our application across multiple platforms but we also needed a simple, consistent, and attractive UI that successfully carried over the absorption implications for our users.

The key to our success can be summed up in one word: talking.

It's an understatement to say that communication between mobile app developers and their design teams are important. It's crucial. When these two teams work together, flaws are more easily discovered, and time is managed much more efficiently, especially when developing across multiple mobile platforms. In other words, by keeping developers and designers talking throughout the process for each platform, you avoid mistakes and save time.

So, how did we get our two teams to 'talk on' while building tawkon? Our process involved three steps:

1. Guide the Application with UX

The mobile app market has matured since its inception: it's never been more important for a mobile app to look and feel as good as it runs. With so many apps to choose from on any platform, users aren't looking for good apps, they're looking for great apps. That's why, from even the earliest stages, developers must involve UX & UI experts to use the design of an app to take it from good to great.
