Dear !
Nowadays London is more Tech-Event-Hectic-City than Tech-City!
First, we organized Droidcon. With 650 developers attending, it was definitely one of the largest Android conference in the world today! If you missed the event, the videos of the talks are now available.
Then we helped with the Nokia World hackathon for the launch of the new Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices, where some very cool apps were produced that should soon be available!
In the midst of all this, I could spend little time on my topic du jour: the "webification of apps".
I'm not talking about web vs apps -- we do not live in a black and white world where one has to annihilate the other. What I'm talking about is the convergence of practices between the web and the app world. A few examples:
- Your smartphone service is down. Do not shout at the operator, but ask about the Blackberry servers!
- If you're worried about your application data usage, Onavo has a few tricks to share!
- My mobile ads don't generate revenues... don't worry, we'll think about new formats,
- WebOS disappears, but Tizen comes to the rescue of those hoping for an all-HTML SDK .
- Mobile M&As are snowballing: Nitobi, the makers of Phonegap, were acquired by Adobe; Future Platforms, known for their HTML-loving cross-platform development, were acquired by Vexed (Hey, 2 WIPjam speakers!).
- And new hybrid development solutions are released, like Wormhole.
If you're interested in discussing the subject, I'll be in Hong Kong for Mobile Asia Congress, so feel free to drop by our reception (sponsored by Airpush) or get in touch if you're interested in speaking opportunities.
Best,
Thibaut

Have you considered how the data traffic your app consumes affects the experience of your end users? As operators shift away from truly unlimited data plans and users consume more and more data-heavy content, it will become a much more pressing issue.
Yuval Ariav, chief architect of Onavo, has a number of tips you can implement in your application to make its data usage more palatable to the end user -- and make them happier with your app and more likely to keep on using it:
During our work on the 'Magical Shrinking Machine' here at Onavo, we have come across hundreds of thousands of different iOS and Android apps and services. After studying these apps, we have identified a relatively small set of design patterns (or "network usage models") on the apps' side that drive their usage of network resources. The more popular models seem to be those that are easier to implement and more design-intuitive, but unfortunately these easy-to-implement models don't always coincide with being data-friendly and at times can turn apps into genuine data hogs.
To help developers avoid these pitfalls, we have compiled a list of design and implementation guidelines for responsible network behaviour for mobile apps and services. These tips are OS-independent, and apply for iOS and Android apps alike, and are ordered in ease of implementation:
1. Have a data-friendly state of mind
2. Use built-in compression protocols
3. Design for a Mobile UI
4. Implement different behaviors for different networks
5. Defer some network operations to Wi-Fi
6. Make your app roaming-ready

MoSync, a small company from Sweden, has released the latest version of its open-source development environment, which it says combines the ease of development and UI slickness of HTML5 with the powerful capabilities of C++, giving developers the best of both worlds. Part of its latest (v2.7) release, it's dubbed "Wormhole Technology", and offers several benefits for developers, while maintaining Mosync's core capability of enabling cross-platform development.
The main benefit is really playing to the strengths of both HTML5 and C++, as Wormhole lets users keep their UI and application logic in HTML5 and Javascript, but drop down into C++ to access certain functionalities or perform certain actions. For instance, if an app needed to perform physics calculations that weren't feasible in HTML5 or JavaScript, it could do them with C++.
The SDK also allows experienced C++ developers to transition their apps to HTML5. They can use MoSync to take an app that may be 80% C++, and do the presentation layer in HTML5, and as HTML5 becomes more powerful, easily replace more of the C++ code with it. The reverse is true for web developers, who can take an HTML5 app and add in C++ where needed.

From the WIP Company Directory:
Closertag is a London-based design firm whose mission is to create clear, fluid and useful cross-channel experiences for mobile native apps, mobile web sites, mobile web apps, interactive TV and beyond.
From the WIP API Catalog: The BlueVia SMS is a messaging API -- with a big twist. On certain networks, instead of paying the operator to send and receive messages, developers get paid for the messages their apps generate! From the WIP Regional Hubs: Michigan may best be known as the home of the automobile, but it's also home to a vibrant and active mobile developer community, supported by the Mobile Technology Association of Michigan.
