Dear !
While I was at the Intel devcon this week, someone made a comment that there is only room for 4 platforms in the industry. Intel expressed that they aimed to be #5, with the newly announced Tizen platform (the combined Meego, Limo and Linux Foundations, supported by Intel and Samsung).
That begged the question - who is #4? There was common agreement that Apple, Android and Microsoft were the top 3. Interestingly there was a lot of discussion and consensus that the #4 spot belonged to Amazon, due to their integration with a proven retail model. Not that they really have their own platform... yet... (rumours of a webOS fit are rampant), but the fact that Amazon is already in your wallet shows a similar pattern to what Apple did with the music store start.
So what about the carriers/operators? They already have that payment connection, so if the model holds, it should be assumed that they will be able to gain traction for their appstores, once carrier billing becomes more widespread. A big issue with the operators though is their seeming inability to #failfast and #pivot and generally move at the speed of mobile.
So who is #4? What do the carriers/operators need to do? Discuss!!
I'm headed off to London today, and looking forward to London Mobile Week, which includes the DroidconUK event that WIP is producing; and seeing our London based WIPsters - @ThibautR and @Harrrrper. If you would like to meet up, talk business or just head out for a drink, let me know!
Best,

Welcome to new readers of our monthly newsletter - nice to meet you on our travels or at our WIPJam sessions. We only send out this newsletter once/month; and the occasional eblast about our own events. We pledge not to spam and inundate you with emails. However, if you aren't interested in receiving our information, please use the opt out link below - no hard feelings!
Here are a few tidbits from the recent WIP Developer Survey:
- 37% of developers just got to coding without having a plan (We advocate planning!)
- 25% developed 5-10 10 or more apps before they became successful, 30% developers just two, and 16% over ten (remember Rovio had close to 60 tries so don't give up, just pivot!)
- 4% are working on Enterprise apps (Sounds like an opportunity there somewhere.)
- -1% have never spoken to their customer (Ouch! - a key and easy business tool.)
We will summarize and use the information in some upcoming articles and presentations. We are also planning another community project booklet to compliment the Developers' Guide to the Galaxy - The Developers Guide to the Parallel Universe: Marketing & Life-cycle Management for your App.
Let me know if you would like to participate!

There's no doubt that the booming world of APIs helps mobile developers build bigger and better apps, and they've become an integral part of every developer's arsenal. But while many people focus on all the features and functionality that APIs can bring to the table, it's important to remember that third-party APIs can also have a negative effect on your app, if you don't manage them properly.
For instance, are you using a Google Maps API in your app or mobile web site? If so, do you remember back in April when Google announced some pretty significant changes to the terms of use, including transaction limits and a requirement that applications pass on any advertising on the maps to users? Because those new terms take effect on October 1 -- so if you haven't reviewed the new terms and made changes, you'd better get a move on!
This is an example of how developers can live at the whim of API providers, particularly when they're using freely available APIs. Anytime you integrate a third-party API into one of your apps and services, you need to take steps to properly monitor and manage that API -- and not just from a technical standpoint. Make sure that you are aware of any changes to the terms of service or other aspects of the API, and when you need to make changes to your app, be sure you leave enough time for testing, for re-submission and approval from app stores, and for users to upgrade -- since they all won't upgrade right away!
