August 2011

Dear !

Wanted -  Mobile App case studies

I'm doing some research on all the components that go into making a successful app.  Is it a good idea?  Good planning.  Good market research?  Good marketing?  Practice?  Having investment?  Living in 'the valley'? or having a good luck charm?  My sense is a combination of the above, and a lot of hard work.

Help me out by completing this brief survey.   Also - if you are interested in being a case study, please contact me directly.

I had a bit of a chuckle last week when I received the Rutberg Wireless Newsletter for August.  It's always a good read for its insights, trend tracking, and listings of recent investments and M&A activity in our industry.  In this issue they predicted that mobile is starting a 10 year growth spurt!  Ah - haven't we just been on a 10 year cycle?  It's actually 10 years now that I met in a bar (how unusual) with a bunch of folks from the Vancouver wireless industry and we decided that creating an association would be a good idea because this wireless thing was really starting to take off, and we should support each other with advice and information.  WINBC (now DigiBC) was birthed  as one of the world's first regional wireless associations, and eventually supported the growth of other associations, commercialization centres and developer programs around the world, as well as the impetus for WIP.

With the market uncertainly in many parts of the world, it's good to know that our mobile industry isn't slowing down anytime soon!  I hope to find some insight in this research that will help you continue to ride the curve upwards.

I'm actually home in Vancouver for a full 6 weeks of no travel - a nice break.  The rest of the team is taking some much deserved downtime too.  In the meantime we are working hard with a number of our Tier One members on their developer programs and events, continuing to build out some new pieces to our website (watch for regional Hubs coming soon), planning for the Back to School Webinar series of 12+ sessions we are hosting with Immersion and a number of partners.  We are producing DroidconUK and again hosting WIPJam at CTIA in October - contact me for some remaining sponsorship opportunities.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Best,

Caroline

Congratulations to Thibaut and Ozlam who were married in Turkey last week!

From the WIP Blog

Push notifications offer a great way for developers to prompt users back to their applications and create a richer, more rewarding user experience. Urban Airship, a leading provider of push notifications for iOS and Android, recently launched "location push notifications," which add location information into the mix, and give developers a great way to generate content-based location-specific messages. On the WIP blog, learn more about what UA is up to, and how location push notifications can add great new features to your app.

August App Store Report

The WIP App Store Catalog now lists 121 app stores for developers to distribute their apps. The August edition of the WIP App Store Report, a PDF version of the data in the catalog, includes a look this month at how various platforms and app stores are supporting developer forays into the enterprise market. Apple recently announced that businesses could bulk purchase apps for their employees through the iTunes App Store; how do other stores compare? Find out in this month's report.
