Dear !
 | | Re-energizing at the Muther! |
You knew the competition was in trouble when the fiercest developers showed up with servers, big screens, huge jars of protein powder, sleeping bags (we brought the pup tent and some pillows); and quickly took over the choice coding spots in the room. The Muther! was on!
The Muther! is our biggest event yet. We wanted it to be a great well organized event, but more importantly in our quest to support the development of great apps, we focused the Muther! to provide the elements we think are important to successful app development:
- Community connections - peer to peer collaboration
- Ecosystem connections - access to the experts and the source of mobile development tools/APIs, during the coding process
- Information Connections - knowledge of the variety of tools, APIs, and platforms that are available to turn good, ordinary, 'seen that' apps into great apps! We were fortunate to have folks join us like Immersion (haptics are the next in cool), Viafo (social networking platform), Nuance (speech recognition), FITML (data scrapping), Crittercism (error/crash reporting) ...- well you get the idea.
See below for the whole scoop. Thanks to all of our sponsors and participants. We all had a lot of fun and little sleep, and look forward to hosting other Muthers! in the Eastern US and other parts of the world.
Note: Here is a listing of all the apps presented. If you were one of the developers, please send @Caaarlo a link to your app or presentation for inclusion.
They say if aren't having fun in your job anymore - move on.
 | | Checking Out LTE operated Helicopter at China Mobile HQ in Guangzhou |
I can honestly say I am still having BIG fun at WIP. June gave me an opportunity to travel to Guangzhou, China to see some of China
Mobile's LTE trials (loved the helicopter, maybe next time they will let me operate it), and then a meeting with Lawrence Li of the HKWDC to find out about some of their great mobile companies.
 | | Best T-shirts of Conference Season (MoSoConf & deCarta) |
Then off to Saskatoon where I had the pleasure of Chairing Canada's Mobile Social conference. Besides getting a great #winning tshirt (one I actually wear and my other fav from deCarta - see pics),hearing a ton of great speakers including advice from Saul Colt of Freshbooks elaborate on his marketing mantra - make them 'Laugh, Think & Cry', over 20 local companies pitched their apps (there is a ton of smart/creative people in Saskatoon folks!).
In addition to the #muthermobile #roadtrip down to Mountain View, with @Harrrper on the way down and @wrlee on the way back, including a stop for a few days with the great WIP team in Napa for our midyear meeting. Now clean up at home base and some time spent with Google+ (at this point it's too much like 'work' without enough fun). July is a few stops in DC (I finally get to be a tourist there), NYC and a few other stops along the way. Never a dull moment and well; still lots of fun!
Happy summer everyone!

THE MUTHER! OF ALL HACKATHONS -- 300+ PEOPLE, 50 APPS!
Our first Muther! of all Hackathons + DevCon was a huge success! Held at the end of June at the Computer History Museum in Mountain, View, Calif., it attracted more than 300 attendees and about 50 apps were entered in the competition. Thanks to our great sponsors, we awarded more than $100,000 in prizes to developers for their outstanding and creative applications. Be sure to check out the WIP blog for a recap of the event, as well as a list of the winners. We had a lot of fun, even if we did miss out on some sleep, but like we say: innovation trumps sleep, always. We're looking to take the Muther! on the road to more locations later in the year, so keep an eye on our site for a stop near you!

And a big thanks to our sponsors, we couldn't do it without you!

Interview with Muther! App Winner Yosun Chang
One of the great apps that was developed at the Muther! of all Hackathons was Yosun Chang's Tap Shake Messenger, which lets visually impaired people send and receive SMS by using "haptic Braille" enabled by the Immersion haptic SDK. Hear more about Yosun's app and learn how she came up with and created it in an interview with her on the WIP blog.
