LETTER FROM WIP
Blurry-jour !
I started the year talking about blurry boundaries that blur, capturing the spirit of experimentations we're seeing among API providers...
April comes and I'm far from looking like a fool... many wish they could claim the same:
- The Blackberry Playbook runs Android... Android Market distributes Qt ... but not WP7 and not a good number of Nokia phones by 2012... And in case you wondered the Playbook won't run Qt as the app is NDK based...
- With 118 app stores you would think that the likes of Amazon or operators would try to make developers' life easy... well think again! A majority of developers put their apps in 1-2 stores only, because placing apps in stores is just too painful...
- There's a PR workaround though... it's called exclusive distribution. If you're not able to do a Rovio-type exclusivity... no need to worry! Just don't bother putting your app into any other store and call it "exclusive distribution". You can also do like Amazon and claim it's only available through Android Market and Amazon and only for US customers for a new version of the glass walled garden.
- You would think that looking elsewhere would help regain your sanity? Tune into the TV-app world! Fragmentation fragmentation fragmentation... Maybe they need a mobile helper? Who would you choose? Qt, Mediaroom (WP7) or Android?
- Symbian is opening, Android is closing... or is it the contrary?
"Criticism is easy, mobile development is difficult" (Recognize the quote?). So I'll stop criticizing and see how WIP can help out a bit!
- Confused by all these new APIs and no time to try them? Why not join us in the Valley For The Muther! of All Hackathons June 24-25 for a weekend of coding and trying out new APIs, frameworks...
- Confused about in-app advertising? Read the latest Inneractive report on in-app advertising and get a better feel of what platforms and apps work works and what's fad.
- Confused about the whole space but want to find out more? If you're in Canada you can come and join us at one of our WIPJam events in Vancouver in May or Saskatoon in June.
- See our Call for Participation below if you're interested in speaking or leading a discussion at any of the above events!
- Confused about app stores? Our latest app store report is out looking at in-app payments.
- Not confused? Help out other WIPsters or ask for help in the Marketplace
- Know someone confused... share the love and forward this newsletter!
- Still confused? It's maybe time to get in touch about becoming a WIP member!
Best,
Thibaut

NEED AN EVENT TO ATTEND?
We were all pretty worn out at the end of the first quarter, with CES, MWC, SXSW, CTIA, AnDevCon, IPTV World Forum, Droidcon and more! Things on the event front might take a quick breather, but there's never any shortage of places you can be in the mobile world to network, learn and do business. Find your next destination in the WIP Mobile Community Calendar, a listing of more than 100 upcoming events worldwide. You can add your own event to the listing, too.

App Store Report
The WIP App Store Catalog now lists 118 app stores for developers to distribute their apps. The April edition of the App Store Report, a PDF version of the data in the catalog, includes a look this month at in-app payments -- the hottest monetization tactic for mobile developers right now. While it's a great revenue model, it's got some difficulties. Find out more in this month's report.

Featured Company - Airpush
The WIP Company Directory includes profiles of more than 450 companies that are ready to work with mobile developers. This month's featured company is Airpush, a Los Angeles-based mobile ad network that serves push notification ads instead of traditional banners. Ads appear in the notification tray of Android devices, where they can be viewed at the user's convenience rather than while using an app. This generates significantly more ad engagement versus traditional in-app ads.

Featured Marketplace Ad - 5 Free Pods at APPNATION
The WIP Marketplace is filled with jobs, free event passes and more. This month's featured ad is from the APPNATION event, which is giving away 5 free demo pods at its event WIP readers! Check out the post to find out how to win one. Other posts include:
- London-based startup looking for a tech lead
- a call for students for Google's Summer of Code
