News from WIP
March 2011
Hi  ,

WIP team at MWC11I say it every year after Mobile World Congress.  I could have used one more day to get things done, but one more day would have killed me!  It is such an intensive week of walking and more walking; speaking, observing, hosting, meeting and a few receptions and parties.  But it is the absolute best week of the year for mobile.  Attendance at MWC 2011 was up to over 60,000 and spirits were high.  As you stare out at the sea of people and the expanse of halls and pavillons its hard not to get a chill of excitment seeing how large this industry really is, and there is more to come as we sit on the precipice of a phenomenon that is over taking the world. Where else would we rather be??!!

Despite the highs of the week, there wasn't much 'news' to speak of.  The focus on Android and tablets was also seen at CES.  And the big scoop happened the Friday before from the Nokia/Microsoft partnership.  Developers were there in a larger force, noticed by the doubling of hosted ADCs (Application Developer Conferences  in AppPlanet) from 5 last year to 10 this year (including WIPJam), and a very noticeable growth in t-shirts! HTML5, cross platform issues, APIs, and making money continue to be the key threads of discussion.  WAC was out in full force with its own ADC and huge developer booth, it is still very much in wait and see mode by developers.  Telefonica  launched its new BlueVia program that is turning heads in the industry with its innovative and refreshing API business model - sharing with developers between 10-20% of traffic revenue, and 50% of ad-revenue.  Contact me if you would like to find out more or particpate in the closed beta.

I would like to see more application developer booths in App Planet, but unfortunately the costs are prohibitive for most of the small companies.  The flavour of AppPlanet is already losing its 'developer' charm, becoming too corporate.  We have some ideas about how MWC can address this for next year.   We did host our largest WIPJam ever, our 4th at MWC - check out photos here , our new photo booth, an overview of the discussion groups! We understand alot of good business deals and partnerships came together at our events - exactly what we like to hear!!  Thanks so much to our Storytellers, Discussion Leaders, Blinkenroid, all of our attendees and our sponsors.  Thanks too to GSMA for a great partnership - til next year!

We are now onto CTIA, the big US show, which has a hard act to follow from MWC in terms of excitement but also mindshare and bandwidth - a lot of us are still recovering from MWC!  Thankfully next year, MWC is moving to later in February from the 27 to  March 1; and CTIA is moving to May in New Orleans (looking forward to it being back there!).  We do like CTIA for a larger enterprise focus, and being in Orlando, we expect a larger LATM focus too.

Don't forget to enter AT&T's Open Call - deadline is March 8.  A valuable opportunity to get a meeting with AT&T at CTIA (100 spots so lots of opportunity), and perhaps win some cold hard cash too!

Where to find us next:

- March 6-8: Harper is attending AnDevCon (Android Developer Conference) in San Mateo

- March 7-10:  Carlo and I are in DC for meetings, and March 11 I am in Denver

- March 12-16:  Carlo is at SxSW with his Bday on the 12th and presentation on the 14th

- March 23-24:  Thibaut is attending Droidcon in Berlin (see note on free passes below).

- March 22-24:  Carlo, Teresa and I are in Orlando for CTIA.  Catch our party on March 23, and WIPJam on Thursday, March 24 (Free CTIA passes for all who register for WIPJam).

See you soon.

Best, Caroline

Latest App Store Report - Slowing Growth
113 app storesThe WIP APP STORE CATALOG held steady at 113 stores during February. reflecting the slow growth we've seen in the app store market so far in 2011. We've talked at length over the last several months about the pains developers feel in dealing with so many stores; we could be on the cusp of a shakeout in the app store market, leaving only the biggest players standing. See more in this month's WIP App Store Report.

Check Out The  WIP Mobile API Catalog!

The WIP Mobile API Catalog is a listing of mobile APIs that developers can use to expand the functionality and increase the quality of their apps. It continues to grow as more and more APIs get listed in it, so be sure to check it out. For instance, if you're looking for help with location in your app, it lists a number of different APIs from companies like deCarta, Telenav, Telefonica, OneAPI, Sprint, Verizon and more.

Like the other content on our site, it's community-based, which means you can add to it! If you offer an API for mobile developers, help spread the word about it by entering it there!
