Hello young !
Speed!!!
No I'm not talking about the long series of Keanu Reeves movies (or did he leave half way through cause it wasn't good enough for him?).
What I'm talking about instead is the sheer speed the mobile space is driving at right now...
It is something I realize whenever bringing someone in from another industry, graphic designers, printers, or simply new interns on WIP business ... after a week of working with us the usual comment is "you guys in mobile want things done so fast"!
Agree or disagree? Quick or Not so Quick?
Quick : The pace at which the mobile industry is becoming more like a fashion industry...
Proof-point: Were you not invited to see the latest Xmas 2010 device collection?
Quick : How mobile is now at the forefront of consumer electronics ..
Proofpoint: Android & Meego, 2 mobile operating system now taking over the IPTV space. Look at how CES is becoming more and more of a mobile event, with connected devices becoming the norm... And this is why we will be at CES part of the AT&T Dev summit.
Quick: How mobile is adopting web practices to cope with the speed of development
Proof-point: We talked about Mobileapps 2.0 previously, and quoting a large web service provider 'Mobile took us as tsunami we didn't expect the sheer complexity of it'. The latest debates on using W3C warning against using html5 in websites is generally welcomed in mobile circles by a shrug meaning fragmentation is part of our DNA... use html5 when it makes your life easier, do not hesitate!
Quick: The building of companies upon a search or recommendation "algorithm"
Proof-point: We are now listing 107 appstores, a majority of which have built some form of recommendation algorithm. Which means 100 or so algorithms to be understood and reverse engineered by anyone looking to do an application store equivalent of SEO... which we dubbed APO .
Quick: Nokia & Symbian
Proof-point: Now this is a contentious one... What I'm referring too is the announcement by Nokia that they would release software upgrades for Symbian phones... Apple and all Android device manufacturers have been doing it for a while, with Nokia joining it has now become the norm in mobile!
Not so Quick: Placing apps in appstore is an increasingly uphill battle with their numbers growing daily?
Proofpoint: Our latest presentation at Apps World where we talked about issues with appstore placement... Good news is we just launched a tool to help you prepare your appstore placement by telling you what "material to prepare", it's still beta let us know your feedback!
Not so Quick: How we all share our knowledge and experiences...
Proofpoint: Again and again I'm surprised to see how people in mobile are hesitant to share their experiences and learn from one another. For this reason we're going to run a call for the best developer stories : ahahhah moments, success / horror stories in appstores. We'll offer a ticket to MWC and a speaking slot at our jam in Barcelona for the best stories! All you need to do is send us an email with your best story

Last month, we launched the new WIP Mobile API Catalog, a listing of mobile APIs that developers can use to expand the functionality and increase the quality of their apps. It continues to grow as more and more APIs get listed in it, so be sure to check it out. For instance, if you're looking for help with location in your app, it lists a number of different APIs from companies like deCarta, Telenav, Telefonica, OneAPI, Sprint, Verizon and more.
