THE CONNECTOR
News from WIP
November 2010
Hi !

As mobile conferences and announcements roll to an end for this season here are some of my take-aways and lessons learned:

It is impossible to keep up with email while travelling.  My inbox seems to have a steady 220 or so emails that need some sort of response.  Apologies to anyone waiting for something - best to just send it again!  My twinge of guilt abated for a few secs where someone else who will not be named, told me she has 2000!

There is a concerted effort going on to build and showcase quality applications.  Kudos to BlackBerry for their Super Apps initiative, and to Verizon for their VCast App Store featuring Android Apps.  Some developers cry that the market should decide - well they can in the other 100 app stores that are out there.  The developers I know who have quality applications are stoked at a way to distinguish themselves.

It is still anyone's game.  That's a blog I wanted to write about back in June while attending Qualcomm's Uplinq event and I continue to see the chess pieces shift.  You can't count out the companies like Qualcomm and Microsoft with deep pockets; Android is becoming more fragmented; Nokia will probably gets its act together.

Mobile Apps 2.0 (we think we coined this), is the answer for quality, sustainable, money making apps.  It means looking beyond an app that is free that lasts for a month.  It means getting to basics with a roadmap of development - see our multi blogs on the subject.

The pull for developers is stronger than ever and developers are getting tired of it (unless they are getting paid to develop apps for a particular program).  At the end of the day, developers rarely make sustainable money on just one platform; but the developer programs only want focus on their platform.  Developers are increasingly relying on peer support.  The programs and conferences that win in the future will facilitate peer interaction and cross platform development learnings.

Developers need earlier access to information whether it is market(customer) or technical in nature.  They need to plan.  Post app launch analytics is a necessity; but is only half the equation.

We have already declared 2011 as the Year of APIs.  Developers - here's your chance to get your say in some of the standards, please take time to provide feedback to NGMN's survey.

I have a great team!  No where was this more evident that at the Sprint conference we just attended. Carlo, Teresa and I went out running one of the mornings and came upon a man down on the trail.  We worked together to make sure he was taken care of.  Carlo especially jumped in and performed CPR - our hero!  Surprisingly and most gratefully, the man is out of the hospital.  We'd like to encourage all of you to watch this video, so you know you'll know how to react if needed.  http://handsonlycpr.org/

Where you will find us next:

- November 8 and 9, Amsterdam, Thibaut is attending SEE, Symbian's DevCon.

- Nov 15-19, Hong Kong, where I am attending Mobile Asia Congress (Mac), including moderating the App Planet Forum on November 16th (send me questions for the panels); and hosting our WIP Connector party in the evening (over 110 registered already).

Best, Caroline

Check Out The New WIP Mobile API Catalog!

Last month, we launched the new WIP Mobile API Catalog, a listing of mobile APIs that developers can use to expand the functionality and increase the quality of their apps. It continues to grow as more and more APIs get listed in it, so be sure to check it out. For instance, if you're looking for help with location in your app, it lists a number of different APIs from companies like deCarta, Telenav, Telefonica, OneAPI, Sprint, Verizon and more.

Like the other content on our site, it's community-based, which means you can add to it! If you offer an API for mobile developers, help spread the word about it by entering it there!

Latest App Store Report - 103 and Counting

103 app stores! The WIP APP STORE CATALOG passed a big milestone this month -- it now lists over 100 stores!

In the November edition of the WIP App Store Report, a PDF version of the Wiki that includes a selection of its data on each app store, as well as some additional content, we ask "how many app stores is too many?".

With 103 app stores in the market, one would think that the perfect one is out there somewhere, but plenty of issues for both developers and consumers remain, leading to the entry of new stores with a better plan or a different niche. But should providers focus on improving existing stores and making them better instead of launching new stores? Check out the report for the full analysis, then weigh in on the WIP blog with your comments.
Over 430 Companies in the WIP Resource Directory

Ready to Help Developers - Over 430 companies profiled in the
WIP Resource Directory

The WIP Resource Directory is a great way to find suppliers, potential customers and partners.  You can search for COMPANIES that have tools and resources for mobile development by company name, category or tag.

There are over 1500 tags to search in the tag cloud.  Companies can also be sorted by 3 categories:

·          WHAT technology are you developing?

·          WHERE are you in the development cycle?

·          WHO do you need to partner with?

Each category has several sub-categories to further define you search.

We found our featured company by searching for the tag: j2me.  This search pulled up 18 companies.

Featured Resource:

Enough SoftwareEnough Software creates and markets mobile development tools, mobile applications and provides mobile services.  Their flagship product, J2ME Polish, is an Open Source framework for developers of mobile applications that has been downloaded and installed over one million times. They help companies to develop and realize ideas and get them running on any mobile platform (J2ME, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Android, iPhone, and more).

 Best Mobile Blogs

We are launching a new section of the newsletter this month, highlighting some of the best blogs we've seen lately from around the web, as well as some posts from the WIP blog that you don't want to miss!

Rafe Blandford over at All About Symbian put together an excellent piece looking at the future of the platform after Nokia announced that all app development would move into Qt.

We've been hearing lots about APIs lately -- and launched our API catalog as a way for developers to keep tabs on them -- and Dean Bubley from Disruptive Wireless wonders how network API business models will shake out.

Mike Rowehl, one of our UnPanelists at the Sprint Dev Con, dug into some research around advertising vs. virtual goods in mobile apps.

At Mobile Monday Austin earlier this week, Carlo posted some great device data points from Nielsen Mobile on Twitter, and Brian Fling collected them all into a single post for easy reading.

Brian also pointed to a great thread on Stack Overflow on how much it really costs to make an iPhone app.

Caroline wonders if .99999 is an outdated goal for developers, given they are now playing in application software land where customers have already accepted less than perfect.

And from the WIP blog last month, check out:
- Thibaut's interview with Noam Yasour from InMobi on monetizing apps with ads and other methods

- Carlo's presentation from the Android Bootcamp at CTIA on working with Android internationally

- Our live coverage of the WIPJam at OSiM

- NGMN looking for some feedback on how network APIs should work in next-gen networks
