Hi !
You'll
recall last month we worked with our community to publish an Open Letter to WAC from the Mobile Developers. Well - it was
our biggest story yet for WIP, judging by the number of click thrus from the
newsletter and the numbers of emails we received from operators and developers
alike! It's especially created quite a
buzz amongst the operators who told me they think it is a great
initiative. And yes, WAC is listening!
Quite
frankly I'm not sure why they aren't officially responding to and openly
working with developers yet; typically trying to work behind the scenes to get
enough 'right' before they respond. My
advice: process less; empower more -so open up!
It's the way to get feedback early so no one wastes their time; and to
build the community trust and support that is so needed.
In
our own company, Thibaut gives me a chuckle now and again when he asks 'does
WIP have a process for that'. Well, we
really don't have any processes per say.
That word gets my back up a bit, as I've worked in and with too many
organizations that spend too much time crafting processes without really
thinking about the intent of them and how they will really effect the people. My response to Thibaut: 'I believe in
openness and empowerment' - so yes as our team grows we need to do a better job
of documenting activities that make sure we all know about them and are
empowered with information, but I also want to maintain our corporate culture
that allows us to be flexible and creative too.
We
are pleased to be working with the GSMA, Aepona and three of our Canadian
operators (known as carriers over here) Bell, Rogers and TELUS on the OneAPI
Canadian Pilot. We will be holding a
series of API Hack-a-thons in May in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver to
get feedback from developers. See more
below on how to sign up!
It
sounds like the OneAPI project will also feed into the WAC initiative along
with BONDI and JIL, so here's a great opportunity for developers to get their
opinions heard!

So What's This OneAPI thing?? Calling Canadian Developers!!
|
WIP
is pleased to be working with the GSMA and three Canadian carriers - Bell,
Rogers Communications and TELUS on the Canadian Pilot of OneAPI. Very simply put... OneAPI is set of network
API specificationsbased on existing web standards and principles. The intend is to complement existing
client-side and Web APIs by providing the missing piece: access to network
capabilities and information, regardless of operator.
And where does Canada fit into this?
Would you believe it? The first pilot of OneAPI is taking place in
Canada! No kidding! Our three major carriers - Bell, Rogers and
Telus got together and decided this was a great idea, so agreed to work
together.
The
first API specifications to be published and nearing completion are the
Messaging (SMS and MMS), Location and Payments available in both RESTful and
Web Service flavours.
We
need YOU! YES - calling Canadian
Developers!! Join the API Hack-a-thon This is still a PILOT, so we need developers to work it, play with it and tell US WHAT YOU THINK. Join us for upcoming Hack-a-thons: - Montreal: Thursday, May 13 - Ottawa: Monday, May 17 - Toronto: Tuesday, May 18 - Vancouver: Thursday, May 20
Meet the folks from GSMA, Aepona, Bell, Rogers and Telus, and be eligible for some prizes and devices.

Update on the App Store Wiki - 75 Stores!
|
The
WIP APP STORE WIKI now counts 75 app
stores! In addition to the standard phone-based stores, we are beginning to see some stores targeting other types of devices begin to emerge, such as those targeting netbooks, or even GPS units running WebKit.
This month, we took a look at the breakdown of stores serving different device types. As you'd expect, a majority (39) serve only smartphones, but featurephones are still well-represented. Twenty-six stores serve both types of handsets, and 3 more only work with featurephones. Five stores now serve non-phone devices; we expect this number to grow over the next few months.
Find out more by downloading the WIP monthly App Store Report to see all the latest additions and
their features.
