THE CONNECTOR
News from WIP
February 2010

Hi  !
Thibaut RouffineauIn our Janauary newsletter I indicated that both WIP and mobile developers were going to have a great year.  Well - the good things are already happening!

I'm pleased to announce that Thibaut Rouffineau solidified his relationship with WIP in a big way - as our new partner and shareholder (he can't get away from us now!).  We are thrilled to have someone who brings great experience from working within a developer program, an endless supply of energy, and a very unique, creative mind.  It gives WIP the ability to offer aditional services, and meet the needs of developers and developer programs in more places.  He's is based in London, UK.

APP Planet @ MWCThe second great happening for mobile developers is all the great activities that are taking place atMobile World Congress in the new App Planet.  This is a significant acknowledgement from the 'big boys' that developers are a key player in the mobile ecosystem.  I'd like to take a little credit for this, as I have been knocking on the door of GSMA since 2002 and my WINBC days :-)  WIP is really pleased to be an App Planet partner and one of the 6 developer conferences held onsite in App Planet (Hall 7), along with Vodafone, Motorola, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson, Google and WIPJam.  We were also given over 200 MWC exhibit passes to pass along to developers - this 600 euro savings, makes a big difference whether our small  companies attend or not.  Join me in giving the GSMA a HUGE THANK YOU!  We are looking forward to a great show this year and the next ones too!

WIP has again put our Developer Survivor Guide to MWC together.  You can download the draft, which still needs a bit of touchup, but helps to narrow down booths to visit, and maximize the various activities to attend.  We'll have hard copies on site available directly from us, or in our sponsors' booths.

Where to find us next:
February 14-18th   Mobile World Congress  in Barcelona where we'll be:
- Monday:  Thibaut and I will be taking turns moderating the Applications: Innovation vs Fragmentation Session taking place all day  in Hall 5, with a  number of great speakers
- Tuesday:  At 4:45pm we are kick starting Qualcomm's Reception with our WIP QUIZ, 4:45pm in the App Planet Hall.  Get there early for the good prizes!
- Wednesday:  I'm on a panel with Mike Short from O2 and Andrea Daykin from Telefonica in Hall 2 that the Canadian's are putting on, then off to the Carnival of Nations Party we are hosting with ECO.
- Thursday - WIPJam of course!
- and lots of parties and receptions throughout the week including NAVTEQ's LBS Challenge Awards Ceremony on Sunday.
February 22-24th - The whole WIP team is in London
Feb 25 - back in Vancouver for me to catch the tail end of the Olympics.  Go Canada!

And we can't forgot about CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas coming up really quick in March.  WIPJam is taking place on the pre-day, March 22.

Caroline having fun with WIP Quiz, AT&T Dev Summit, CESSee you soon!

Best, Caroline

Update on the App Store Wiki
January App Store Matrix for download
Our WIP APP STORE WIKI continues to grow and now boasts 46 App Stores, up from 20 only two months ago. Last month was a busy month indeed . CES was a fertile ground for appstore announcements in particular. Both by industry heavyweights such as AT&T-Qualcomm, Intel, Motorola, Infosys-Airtel but also a score of smaller players moving into the white label and recommendation space with Cellmania, whiteapp, iWikiPhone, PremierAppshop and their branded counterpart such as MyHub by Carphone Warehouse-GetJar in the UK. Another interesting addition is AppCentral a second addition to the world of enterprise mobile appstores (not to be mistaken wit the rumored Google enterprise cloud appstore).
More information to come in our monthly appstore blog, for now you can read and listen to our latest appstore blog: Getjar unfoled and  download the February release of the appstore comprator with all the February updates to the AppStore matrix for easy comparison.

Update on new Wiki Resources for Developers
We observed over many years, that the very successful development companies were the ones that not only understood their ecosystem, but were 'connected' to many of the players in it.  Our WIPwiki is based on an ecosystem chart we developed several year ago.  We renamed the WIPwiki to Wiki Resources on the new site; which now lists 391 companies that support mobile development.  Use it as your market intelligence to find the companies necessary to speed your time to market.

We Added 5 new companies:

Aware Networks  delivers personalized Web services to mobile subscribers and organizations and offer associated consulting services in cellular telephony.

Daffodil Software a leading IT service provider from India has Java EE services including product development and implementation, Online business solutions with powerful web strategies, Migration and porting of other proprietary architectures to J2EE, RIA & WEB 2.0 applications and Web Services.

INSITU MOBILE SOFTWARE  Research, design and mobile software development  in Colombia and world wide

Adremixer aggregates and analyzes end-to-end mobile ad performance across multiple ad networks and gives you powerful tools to optimise ROI and conversions.

Openhanced is a brand new name for a company that has acquired a profound knowledge of the mobile market, technologies and connectible services.

My Digital Footprint - "where your privacy will be someone else's business!"

A new strategy and business book on identity, privacy, trust and the future direction of the Web.  Our good friend, accomplished author and entrepreneur, Tony Fish explores where next for the Web, the emerging business models, how value and wealth will be created and critically who owns the digital you. Irrespective of personal preference, we all leave digital footprints behind us and they are about much more than just identity. Digital footprints are about where we have been, for how long, how often; with whom and the inter-relationships we formed in getting there. Digital footprints are memories and moments, they are not your personal identity, your passport, bank account or social security number.

As Tony explains in 'My Digital Footprint' there is value in capturing and analysing data from your customer and he has applied this learning with a unique and innovative way to monetise his book:

1. you can go the traditional route and buy the book from Amazon or direct from the publisher,

2. or you can read the book for free www.mydigitalfootprint.com;

3. alternatively by registering on the web site and participating in a collaborative exchange of views and comments, enabling Tony to monetise the self selective community.
