Hi !Do you think Open Innovation is working in the mobile and wireless sector? We first wrote about the
rise of 'open' and open innovation over 2 years ago (and one
blog ago). The premise of Open Innovation is about dropping the mentality of 'not invented
here'; and collaborating with outside partners.
I said back in May 2007, "We are now entering the next phase of Open
Innovation in the form of user input and the proliferation of communities. The
challenge is how to identify the great opportunities and exploit them in a
collaborative way." We decided to benchmark the success of Open Innovation which you can read about in our latest blog. We looked at the rise in open, open source, open APIs, app stores, developer programs and developers. Overall we gave Open Innovation a Pass. However, was also gave it a FAIL for pushing the risk and cost of innovation down to the group that can least afford it - the developer, creating a widening gap between the haves and the have-nots of the industry. We think there is much to be done including an even larger revenue share for developers who take a significant risk for their work; and payment to developers for the time and effort they put into the industry. Let us know what you think! Speaking of the growth in Application Stores - our App Store Wiki continues to grow with information and app stores we never heard of! . Check out the information below, and get access to our AppStoreMatrix pdf to give you great comparison information. This week the WIP team is together in Vancouver for team building stuff like attending the Wavefront Christmas reception last night and tubing and skiing up in Whistler. We are also working hard on our 2010 plan that will see more WIPJams, up dates to the websites and membership, and promotion and work on our Developer Marketing Agency. On behalf of Thibaut Rouffinuea, Teresa Ostman and myself, we'd like to thank you for your continued support of the Wireless Industry Partnership, and we looking forward to working with you in 2010. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and New year.Where to find us next:- AT&T Developer Summit - January 6, 2010 - at CES, in Las Vegas. In addition to me faciliating an Executive Briefing session, join Teresa and I for the WIP Quiz at the start of the Code Camp to test your recall skills and win some cool swag. - We are also gearing up for our next big WIPJam Day for Developers at MWC App Planet in Barcelona on February 18, 2010. It will be our third Jam at Mobile World Congress- so it can only be bigger and better. Sponsorship deadline is December 15, 2010!!!
See you soon! Best, Caroline

New App Store Inventory on the WIPwiki and More Resources added
|
Our WIP APP STORE WIKI continues to grow and now showcases 27 App Stores. We've divided the information into two parts: 1. APP Store Stats and Facts - including information like regional reach, addressable markets, # of apps to date pricing and more. 2. Developer Submission Facts - including the development environment (runtimes, platforms devices), rev share, billing options, fees and certification. Visit and share your comments! **REALLY NEW** - DOWNLOAD THE WIP APPSTORE MATRIX Now an easier way for you to view the app stores and compare. Whatever your purpose is : platform choice, country choice, pricing decision in
a bird's eye view you'll have all the channels in the market. Going forward we
will publish new matrix update on a monthly basis for you to keep track of
evolutions and changes in this space. Having put this together for the
first time there are a few things that jump to mind:
- The sheer volume of channels for Windows Mobile applications, 60% of
appstores do sell Windows Mobile applications
- The emergence of a few independent Android stores but no other major store
outside of these
- The growth of widget based app stores.
