News from WIP
November 2009

Hi  !

Bill Maggs for SEMC leads a discussion groupSticky or Spready?  Which would you choose?  That was the premise for our hot UnPanel on mobile analytics at the WIPJam session at CTIA in San Diego on October 8, 2009.

The winner was Sticky, which measures the user engagement and satisfaction with a mobile application, was chosen by all three UnPanelists  - Sean Galligan of Flurry, Jeff Wender of Nielsen and Mark Donovan of ComScore.  My co-facilitator Seamus McAteer of Majestic Research agreed.  The reason being you want an application to stick, for someone to want it, use it, and more importantly - pay for it!

Jam'n with WIPNow that's not to say that being spready (hey, it was a Jam session) or viral isn't important. And a viral campaign is certainly needed to spread the word in a mobile marketplace that is getting increasingly noisy.  But app developers need to first develop an application to meet a market demand (not a new story, but one worth repeating!)

The next question then was - how do you measure the sticky or spready success of your application?  The UnPanelists and Jammers offered a number of  market level and 'in-app' metrics including.....  To find out more about this session and see more pics - head to the WIPJam blog.

The WIPJam blog also includes a nice round up of  ITU Telecom World that Thibaut attended in Geneva, October 5-9, 2009 entitled -  No PPT, but loads of ties and panels at ITU.
Darius and colleague from HipVoice with Caroline
In other exciting news from CTIA - congratulations to HipVoice, winners of the AT&T Fast Pitch Platinum Awards in the Enterprise category.  When we met Darius Gandhi of HipVoice (see photo)  at our WIPJam session at CTIA in Las Vegas earlier this year, we knew he and his company were winners so we did what we had to do.  We introduced HipVoice to Ed Schmit from AT&T Dev Central and also got Darius to lead a Discussion Session at WIPJam!

The last interesting tidbit from WIPJam came during our opening UnPanel on Going Global, with a comment by Tim Chang of Norwest Ventures partners who let us know that VCs aren't interested in companies whose sole revenue model is based on mobile advertising, the reach just isn't there yet.

Find us in November at:
- BlackBerry Developer ConferenceNovember 9-12 at the Moscone, San Francisco.  I'm leading a session on Community Building on the Thursday, see more below.

We are always interested in meeting new companies - mobile applications or great resources for developers so we can get spready with great news! Send us an email to set something up.

See you soon!

WIP EVENT REPORT:  MobiTechFest
Peter Baldwin
The second annual MobiTechFest was hosted in one of the historical "Sunitorium" buildings in Santa Clara.  This seemed like an appropriate venue as this investor event had a refreshing old-school format which reminded me of the mid-nineties start-up showcases, rather than the somewhat superficial "two minute pitches" that  seem popular nowadays.

The attendees included  16 selected mobile start-ups which had 20 minutes each for their presentations, including some time for Q&A.   See this link for agenda and list of start-ups.

The questions came from 16+ investors including Trinity, Intel, Opus, Blumberg, NRW, Nexit, Band of Angels, Milk Street Ventures, Keiretsu Forum, First Round, Nokia Growth Partners, DFJ, North Bay Angels, Claremont Creek, Storm, Artiman, Granite, T-Ventures, Norwest and Sierra.   The rest of the audience were interested parties from the mobile industry including myself, so there were probably 80 people in total.

As each company had prepared an executive summary which was provided to each attendee, the post presentation questions tended to have more meat which helped everyone get a good overview of each start-up investment opportunity.   Given the current political focus on the US HealthCare issues, it was no great surprise that a Medical Mobile Device company, Telcare was voted as the "Best of the Show".

Reported by:  Peter Baldwin, PB Strategy
Peter Baldwin has a distinguished track record as a mobile pioneer with over 25 years of experience in Mobile Enabling Technology.  Peter is currently CEO of PB Strategic Consultancy who help build successful mobile businesses and can be seen as a faciliator or discussion leader at most WIPJam sessions

WIP is often invited to attend conferences but we can't be everywhere, so are looking for people to attend and report on our behalf.  If you are interested get in touch with Caroline or Teresa.
