THE CONNECTOR
News from WIP
July 2009

Hi  !

The number one developer issue I've heard the last few months is not about fragmentation or monetization; it's about cash flow and getting paid, especially from the big companies.  It seems like the larger companies are pushing out their payment dates from 30 - 45 days, to 45-90 days or longer.  In fact, some developers have stated that they have not seen payments from app/operator store sales for even 6-12 months!  With staff turnover/layoffs high, there is also the 'missing invoice' phenomena.....  Most folks in the big companies don't really understand that $10k-$100k may be chump change for them; but for a small company it means a lot. Doing the 'payroll dance' at the end of the month, and hoping the stars align on cash flow is very stressful.  Wouldn't it be better to spend the time on innovation and making better apps?

Trip Report.   As many of you know, June was a heavier than usual business travel schedule for me as it included 10 airflights, 4 train rides, 6 countries, 3 continents, 1 boat ride, 3 speaking engagements, 2 WIP receptions and 2 mini WIPJAM sessions.  Whew!  A trip report and overview of my impressions can be found here.  The photos below include:  the WIP reception in Singapore sponsored by NAVTEQ, shows the winners of the 3 handsets; and a picture of me and Eric Chan twittering on our boat ride off the coast of Marseille, which was captained by Vincent Berge from Mobile Distillery.  Thanks to everyone who hosted me or attended one of our events.
Marc Naddall from Navteq, winners of devices and Caroline at WIP reception Singapore/Communicasia Eric Chan (Mobile Slate) and Caroline Tweeting on the Med

Thibaut Rouffineau was terrific (ok that's really an understatement, he was damn outstanding) at supporting our sessions in Europe, and has written up a report on the WIPJAM @ Linuxtag which was sponsored by the Symbian Foundation; as well the notes from the WIPJAM@ Nuit du Mobile are on the WIPwiki including information on app stores, NFC, App developments on SIM cards and more.

Here is also a copy of my slides from Medien Forum presentation in Cologne on "It's Raining App Stores - Hallelujah?"

So now its summer!  You think it's time to slow down?  Nuh uh - not when we are still having so much fun!

Upcoming for July:
- Our BIG announcement is the mini WIPJAM session at the Verizon Developer Community Conference, taking place July 28 in San Jose.  I'm really impressed with the effort the Verizon team is putting into making the event great - developer friendly, great content and pretty exciting too!  I can't wait.  If you haven't yet - register now, as it's filling up fast.

And we are gearing up for:
- WIPJAM @ OSiM on September 16 in Amsterdam, see more below
- WIPJAM @ CTIA on October 8 in San Diego.
Contact me now if you are interested in sponsorship or speaking.

All the best for the summer - don't forget the sunscreen!

Best, Caroline
