News from WIP
June 2009

Hi  !

Martin Wrigley from Orange/UTIWe just finished up at JavaOne this week, including our WIPJam session with Java Verified.  See photos here of Martin Wrigely from Orange Partner and the Chair of UTI, waving the 'Finnish' flag, with Teresa Ostman of WIP and me.  A big congratulations to Maureen Backe from TeleAtlas who won the Grand prize of a Skip Barber Racing School Session - we've made it mandatory for winning that she provides us with some photos of her session!

Java Verified announced a new kinder, gentler system of signing that should save developers up to 50% time and costs on certification, and launched a new Java Verified website with all the details. There was some controversy this week regarding Ovi's not requiring java verified signing, however what was less clear is that jv is still considered a 'gold standard' in certification and should make access to Ovi a smoother process.

Maureen Backe, TeleAtlasAn interesting comment was made during the WIPJam UnPanel at JavaOne - there are lots of cool mobile java apps, they just don't get promoted the same way that Apple cranks up its advertising machine.  So true - promotion and perception often go hand in hand.  It will be interesting to see what comes of the newly announced Java App Store.

APP stores continue to take the mindshare of most of us.  We've been doing our own research at WIP, and I'll be presenting some of our findings and advice at the Mobile Media Summit in Cologne in a few weeks.  We'll make sure the information gets to you soon afterwards.

Upcoming this month:
- June 8-12 -  Shanghai speaking at the CanCham Shanghai Lunch on June 10
- June 14-18 - Singapore for Communicasia and some Canadian events, including a WIP Connector Reception on June 16 at Brewerks Riverside, watch the WIPJam site for more information
- June 24 - Cologne, Germany speaking on App Stores at the Mobile Media Summit
- and see below for WIPJam activities in Germany, Amsterdam and Marseille before the end of June.

A bit of a whirlwind for June, but I always look forward to meeting new folks and seeing familiar friendly faces (mostly they are friendly)!

Best, Caroline

WIPwiki:  Sample  Searches to help you find the right resource and partner!

  WIPwiki animated

We recently received this feedback regarding the WIPwiki:  "I am really amazed to see your WIPWiki project and its broad range of useful things, I cannot understand the reasons why I was not aware of it before meeting you. Please let me know what I can do to help you promote it."

So this month we thought we'd show you some examples of searches you can perform in the WIPwiki.  There are many ways to search in the WIPwiki, as you'll see many key words are hyperlinked.  You can also search in the search box, through the Popular Tag Cloud, and through the various categories in the Mobile Ecosystem Chart.

So here are a three searches we performed to find companies that have either tools or resources for developers as follows:

1.  On the Mobile Ecosystem Chart Home Page
CLICK on Runtime Environment
Below it gave a definition: Runtime Environment - a group of applications that do not depend on the device OS or platform to operation.
It included a link to COMPANIES or TIPS that support developers in this area
CLICK on COMPANIES found 110 companies.

2.  In the Stats Box on the Left Hand Side Home Page
CLICK on TagCoud
You'll find 666 tags
CLICK on Android - and you'll find 10 companies that support this platform

3.  Company Search
CLICK on Companies - either on the tool bar, or Browse Box
Search Alphabetically on the 356 companies
Or Use the Left hand colomn to determine who you may need to partner with
CLICK on TOOLS and you'll find 129 companies that may be able to help you.

Do you know one that is missing?  Its' a wiki - so go and add it yourself.
