Hi !
Psst - here's a little secret. 2G services are still alive and well, and
generating a lot of money for developers and operators, even in the US. Mobile 2.0 and 3G tend to get the most amount
of publicity airtime, and do hold great promise with increased conformity with
networks and devices; when business and revenue models get worked out; and users
reach critical mass for all the feature and smartphones that exist. But for the largest part of the worldwide mobile market,
simple phones and prepaid plans rule. An
operator in SE Asia recently said to me: "we are still getting users to move beyond
green means answer and red means stop the call; they aren't ready for more
complexity just yet." He and many other
operators have said: "Just send us simple/sms
type apps, PLEASE!, We aren't getting enough of those." I recently
attended the Nokia Developer Summit in Monaco end of April, where I was
pleased to learn about their Messaging Strategy (Purima Kochikar, who heads up
messaging for Nokia, by far gave the best presentation); which aims to meet
some of these needs, with a Nokia/Ovi twist of course.
Take-away for developers:
Its easy to get caught up in hype, but if you are a small company you
need to get practical about making money and sustaining your company. Consider doing a rethink on your development
and go to market strategy with simple technology that may speed your
development time and get you to a larger market, faster. Remember - everyone phone
has sms! Then use the money you make to
invest in projects for the coming 3G revolution!
Thanks to our readers for the overwhelming response we
received to my Rant on Event Registration last month. I copied it over to our blog site along with the
comments from attendees being overwhelmed by the number of events out there to parents
feeling the frustration of no-shows to their children's birthday parties. It's an issue folks!
