Hi ! Welcome old and new readers - this newsletter is Jam packed!
It's hard to believe that MWC is over for
another year. It's an intense time
leading up to Barcelona
given all of our activities including another successful Jam session. As anticipated, App stores were a huge theme and
attendance although down somewhat didn't seem to be an issue. Ed Kay provides a fuller update on the WIPJAM site and you'll see a few photos in this editorial, including our first ever Jameoke led by Stephen King of Mob4Hire. And my presentation on Connections from the Canada Breakfast can be viewed on Slideshare.
Collaboration was the theme that stood out at
our Jam session as developers' pain from fragmentation is an ever present issue
within platforms, widgets, devices, operator APIs, developer programs and now
App stores too. We are still struggling
at WIP to figure out how to take all the great ideas that emerge at our Jam
sessions, and not only provide it to the community; but develop some solutions
as well. We are open to all ideas - don't
hesitate to contact us.

So we decided that the upcoming Jam session
during CTIA Wireless in Vegas on Thursday, April 2, had to be themed around
Collaboration. And indeed our sponsors
and other developer programs are already rallying around the call with
supporting our topics, the new device bar and a joint social event which we are
hosting that evening: The Dev Program
Bowling SmackDown! You'll have to follow
the information at www.wipjam.com for the
updates and attend Jam to get your invitation. A little more information is
below.
WIP has also partnered with Mobile Distillery
to open up their device database, known as Alembic, to the development
community and our members. Alembic has
over 1300 parameters attributed to over 1000 java devices with more being added
every day. Here's where we need
you: Which Device parameters are most important to you that should be included in the WIP Alembic Lite version? See here for the ones we've chosen to open up
to you. Are they the right ones? Is there something missing that is really
really important? Login to the WIPwiki
and add your comments now. We will
launch in April - so there's no time like the present.
Next Up: March 11-12 will find us at the OSiM event in San Francisco, where I'm Chairing Day 2. There are also a few folks getting together for dinner on March 10, ping me if you'd like to join. March 31 to April 3 is of course CTIA Wireless where you'll find us at: - AT&T Developer Summit on March 31, where I'll be chairing one of the roundtables; - Mobile Monday is hosting a presentation at the MEX Stage on Tuesday, Lubna Dajani from MoMo New York is a powerhouse of contacts, so it's bound to be a great session. - and on Thursday, April 2 is the next WIPJAM session at CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas. Thanks to our partnership with CTIA, WIPJAM is a Special Interest Seminar. Did you know WIP also provides services to help you set up meetings and make the most out of conferences like CTIA. Call us if you need our help to connect you to the right information, resources and people! See you soon. Best, Caroline

ARCchart: Consumer Attitudes on Mobile Apps
|
Consumers have been slow to embrace mobile
applications despite continual predictions that the market is on the verge of
taking off. Today, however, interest in mobile applications has finally been
ignited. In a recently published report, ARCchart found that consumer interest
in mobile content has jumped a massive 23 fold over the past two years.
Researched in association with WaveMetrix, the
ARCchart study tracked consumers' online discussion (buzz) over a period of one
month and evaluated this activity in order to develop a view of the major user
experiences. The study found that the content of applications drives almost 60%
of the buzz, suggesting users have become familiar with the specifics of mobile
applications. Value for money accounted for 18% of the buzz while compatibility
issues accounted for just 6%. Whilst most of consumers' interest is in games, interestingly,
about 10% of discussion was centred around navigation applications.
Consumer
Attitudes Towards Mobile Applications provides
a better understanding of consumers' attitudes towards discovering, purchasing,
downloading, installing and using mobile applications. The findings will help
the various industry stakeholders optimise their approach to application
development, distribution and retail, enriching their customers' experience and
further accelerating growth of the market. Download an excerpt of the report here.

Think Mobile: March 18/19 New York
|
Our friend and fellow Vancouverite Matt Snyder of ADO is Chair of the upcoming conference in New York - Think Mobile. We asked him to tell us a little bit more about it:
ThinkMobile is about what ?
ThinkMobile combines mobile content success
stories with emerging business models in mobile marketing and advertising. It
is about benefiting from the evolution of "the buy side" and
"sell side" of mobile interactive media in a format allowing for
debates about the technologies and business strategies that relate to them This framework enables a dialogue of passion
amongst developers, facilitators of mobile and traditional shops looking to use
mobile as a new revenue generating strategy in these difficult times. As we
know, there are a lot of shows dedicated to mobile marketing and, separately, content. We've brought these two audiences together
under one roof to enable new dialogs concerning the current status and
possibilities and strategies for the future of the overall mobile marketplace.
What is special about this event?
What makes this show special is in the fact it
has one of the best scope in coverage to really gain the know-how and insight
needed to make decisions for your mobile strategy. Most mobile events are
pigeon-holed around a single topical area or vertical. This event gives a wide
array of experts specifically around mobile content and the monetization
strategies that surround them. This is a rare-event that has mobile marketing
and advertising along side the creative content and entertainment development
stories.
What is covered in the Agenda ?
The event features more than 70 speakers from
various industries providing fresh perspectives within the mobile landscape. Sessions
include: Mobile Video and TV, Mobile Music, Mobile Sports, Mobile Browsing, Mobile
Brands with speakers from YouTube, mobiTV, Transpera, Gannett, AP, Pandora,
Thumbplay, Myxer, Mobile Voice; Fring, Truphone, Onepin, Fox, ESPN, NBCsports, Crisp,
Starcut, mobify.me, Opera Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL, Nokia
Keynote sessions will feature Nancy Hill,
President of the AAAA 's on the convergence in the Agency world, Jordan Bernam,
VP, Innovation at AT&T on iPhone and Advertising from a Carrier perspective
as well as Marko Ahtisaari, ex-chief design officer of Nokia, chief creative at
Blyk ( Marketing based Ad Network mobile operator) and a leader in Social media
and location. Another featured
roundtable session will be moderated by
Ralph Simon , Chairman Emeritus, MEF and feature some of today's top apps in
the marketplace such as iFart, Obama, Qik, and Evernote.
How can the the developer community leverage an
event like ThinkMobile?
This event will bring new discussions around
how to best position your development for a go-to-market strategy. As there
will be large amounts of case studies from companies that have brought out
successful products/services and many examples of marketing and monetization
strategies, you can learn first hand what works and what does not. This is
going to be a place for debates, engagement and networking that can
benefit your company in understanding the multiple viewpoints, so that the
developer can make those intelligent choices as it enters mobile.
