THE CONNECTOR
News from WIP
July 2008
Dear ,
(Hello to our new readers.  The WIP newsletter gets published once per month to provide updates on news and activities to help emerging companies and developers get their products and services to market faster.  If you no longer wish to receive this newsletter, there is an easy unsubcribe button below.)

I've got four (4) exciting activities I want to share with you.

First our upcoming partnership activities with CTIA, as they are as passionate about easing developers into the ecosystem as we are:

a one . . .
WIP Developer Pavilion at the upcoming CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment Show, September 10-12 in San Francisco.  We've worked with CTIA to get really exceptional pricing for developers and WIP is going to do some extra promotion, so it's a deal you don't want to miss.  See below for additional detail.  Note:  Deadline is July 11 to ensure a spot in the Official Show Guide - so sign up now.

and a two . . . .
Mobile Jam Session San Francisco 08 - A Day for Developers at CTIA on Friday, October 12.  More detail below.  We are open for sponsorship, speakers and topic ideas.

and a three . . .
We are also working with Showstoppers to offer developers great rates to showcase themselves in front of all the important press during CTIA - again see info below.

and a four . . .
I'm pleased to unveil the new WIPwiki!  A site to help developers identify resources and information to get to market easier and faster.  It's in beta version, which means we want all your feedback.  See below for the scoop.  I shared a bit of information on WIP and the new WIKi with Roger Brinkley during JavaOne in May, here is a link to that Podcast.

I want to send a special thank you to the folks at the Next Generation in Mobile Networks Association, for those who haven't heard about it yet, learn the acronym NGMN.  These are the folks working to ensure that 4G is implemented much more smoothly than 2 and 3G and  that the entire ecosystem is included in upfront planning so fragmentation can be reduced and revenue opportunities can be greater for everyone.

I spoke at the NGMN conference in Frankfurt last month and brought the developer perspective to the mostly C-Level, suit and tie crowd.  In order to get my point across about the differences between developers and C-Level, I went on stage in flipflops, jeans and a tshirt - they didn't kick me off the stage and it went well!  I look forward to working with NGMN and other organizations on how to better listen to and integrate developers.  If you are interested in my presentation, you can download it here. The pictures below show a) before I took off my jacket to reveal tshirt and jeans b) the developer look,

and c) the following Ecosystem panel that included Dr. Hossein Moiin, Group VP Technical Strategy of T-Mobile International - I must say, Hossein was the best moderator I've ever worked with and I hope to entice him to a Mobile Jam session soon if he'll show up in jeans and a t-shirt!  The other panelists included Karim Taga, Managing Director at Arthur D Little.  Gaurav Garv Partner at Sequoia Captial, Prof. Hugh Bradlow, CTO of Telstra, and John Hoadley, VP 4G Business and Ecosystem Development at Nortel.

Unfortunately Steve Jan of imeen was unable to join us - as a developer he was too busy with investor presentations - how fitting!

Thanks also to Gary Reeman who shares Getting to Market tips on successfully entering the European market in this month's newsletter.

Take me out to the Beer Garden BBQ with our Partner WTIA  July 17 in Seattle.

Have a great summer!

Unveiling - the new WIPwiki(beta)

 WIPwiki
Check out the new WIPwiki built to help you navigate the mobile developer ecosystem and make mobile development easier and faster.

It's been put together to help developers find answers to the two most asked questions:
1.  Where do I get started?
2.  What do I do next?

To take the next step, developers need to understand the ecosystem by determining:

What are you developingWhat are you developing?

Where are you Where you are in the development cycle?

WhoWho do you need to work with including tools, partners and other resources.

What's really in it?
Companies - extensive profiles of how they help developers, links to APIs, SDKs and other resources
Developer Programs - who's got one and what do they offer developers
TIPS - on developing and go to market activities

And remember it's a WIKI, so add to it and make changes.

Do you offer developers a tool or resource?
Add your company profile or make changes to the one we may have added for you.

Are you a Developer?
Find the right tool, play with it, make comments on companies and tips, Add Tips to show your development prowess and to help others.

Its in beta, so we do want your comments to make it better and more usable for you.

Getting to Market:  an HR plan to Enter Europe

We asked Gary Reeman to provide some Getting to Market wisdom on entering the European market with a solid HR plan.

North American wireless solutions vendors entering the European market face a number of challenges in implementing an effective human resource plan in Europe. Successful entrants to the European market have:

1.      Communicated a motivating, yet realistic, regional strategy and plan
2.      Articulated the company's differentiators to help win the war for talent
3.      Hired individuals who excel in a remote or virtual working environment
4.      Adopted localized remuneration policies
5.      Implemented an effective onboarding process

Taking each of these points in turn:

1.      It's crucial that you have a clearly articulated plan, with explicit milestones, to build a business in Europe. And this plan must be pragmatic: considerable time and energy is needed to develop relationships across European carriers and local partners. The European mobile sector is large, diverse and complex - your plan must help your local team to prioritize their efforts.

2.      In the war for talent, you must develop a compelling value proposition to explain to potential hires what really differentiates your offering from the multitude of other VC-backed start-ups selling new wireless/multimedia/web 2.0 solutions.

3.      Track record and personality traits are key pointers to a successful hire. Competency-based interviews supplemented by detailed verbal reference checks will provide vital guidance on the candidate's ability to thrive in a remote or virtual team.

4.      Successful companies have developed remuneration packages suited to the European market. Remuneration packages tend to be structured in Europe with less emphasis on equity participation (as there are fewer tax incentives for stock options in Europe) and with more emphasis on fixed salary than on variable/performance-related pay.

5.      Onboarding: As Jim McCool points out in his book "Deciding Who Leads" (www.DecidingWhoLeads.com), integrating new hires into your organisation is one of the key criteria all successful firms need to address. And this is even more crucial when you are hiring one or two individuals who live and work 9-14 hours away from your Head Office by plane ( 5-8 hours away by phone) with no local support network. McCool recommends a 100 day programme encompassing for example training; mentoring; identifying key internal stakeholders; short-term goal-setting to enable some quick wins.
