Dear ,
The illusive big "O" seemed to be the theme for November. The first "O" as in Olympics, where we were part of a series of events and meetings in the UK, facilitating partnerships between UK and Canadian companies given our collective events of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, London's 2010 Summer Games and the recently announced, host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games - Glasgow.
Wireless and communications are a significant component to these large games, and with the right strategy, smaller companies have the opportunity to participate, be it in 'inside the fence' (direct involvement), or 'outside the fence' (indirect involvement with city, tourism and other types of activities). Best bets for inside the fence is to partner with an existing Olympic sponsor, but be forewarned, using the word Olympic is a carefully guarded right. The Canadian High Commission had to quickly drop the big "O" from the promo material of this small event. If you are interested in reviewing Olympic opportunities - here is a good site to start http://www.2010commercecentre.com
The month followed with plenty of discussion of another "O"for Open with Google's Android OS, Verizon's Open development initiative, and Canada's announcement about opening up next year's spectrum bid to new entrants (I have no faith that that will lower my mobile phone bill). At first glance these seem great, but dig a little deeper and it is still just surface dressing on the issues faced by developers in getting their technologies and products to market faster and for less cost; ah and then to actually make money and become a sustainable company. For most developers, Openness just leads to additional fragmentation which means more phones to address, more APIs to download, more configurations to learn - which costs them more time and money.
These Open initiatives also assume that all developers have the same issues - well they don't. We've witnessed recently that the many faces of developers are different including the classic mobile developer, the Enterprise developer, the new media content developer and the plain old software app developer. I'd like to see the industry place more focus on more collaborations and partnerships. Yes - the big companies want to be competitive; but if they do so at the sake of the small developers, we all lose when it comes to innovation.
We have already collected a few great ideas in this regard so we can initiate some action. If you have your own great idea that will help developers or are interested in being part of our Group of Developers Advisory Team let me know.
I'm pleased to announce the formal launch of Wavefront AC, a new organization and facility which aims to reduce development costs and time to market for new mobile products and services. It started with $5million in seed funding from the Provincial Government of BC. I'm the founding Chair of Wavefront, and am looking forward to working with Jim Maynard the President, in making a difference for our developers here in BC and beyond.
And now we've reached December, where I've decided to stay put in Vancouver to focus on our new activities as well as the bottom line and my waistline (all that cheese in Europe!).
All the best for a safe, relaxing and joyous holiday season!
Best, Caroline
