Greetings!
Working our Pre-Ecosystem
After being in the wireless industry for a dozen years, you would think/hope that navigating the industry would be easier. Welcome to wireless that seems to get more complex every day with new entrants, new markets, new technologies, new business models, and folks willing to try new ideas. And let's not forget the technical complexities as the standards morph. In many respects we are really in the midst of a pre-ecosystem which is very risky and provides more questions than answers. But it's exciting - isn't it!
I'm a strong believer in making the path as easy as possible. As mentioned in the last newsletter, WIP is building out some new programs that will be launched in September, including the formation of an industry Mentor Panel that will be able to provide members with some pathfinding down the wireless road to market.
In another pathfinding service, we are also pleased to announce our partnership with Mobile Complete and their Device Anywhere solution. Picture this. You are sitting at home in front of your computer, with your fuzzy slippers on and a glass of merlot inhand. Forget Facebook, you have an application to get to market. Enter Device Anywhere that allows you to upload your application to a real device on a real network. Want to test on the latest Motorola device on the Orange network? No problem! And think about how the service can enhance your investor or customer presentations when they want to see if this application really works, not just another simulation. We'll be officially launching the partnership in a few weeks and are offering WIP members 5 free hours. Can't wait 2 weeks? Email me with the location of the above picture and which one is me, and we'll set you up right away.
Nokia's developer program - Forum Nokia - recently launched a new Tier called LaunchPad as a way for them to support a larger number of developers in our pre-ecosytem.
All the best for the summer vacation period. Be sure to take a bit of downtime. Once September roles around the corner, it's only full speed ahead.

| Getting to Market: Designing a Product |
This month's Go to Market article is about designing a product. We asked our member Tim Phipps from Plextek in the UK for his advice in this interview:
What's the most important aspect in designing a product?
In our experience, the most important aspect of designing a good product is to meet genuine customer needs with the many competing new technologies.
So then, what's the biggest mistake that most companies make in the design phase?
The biggest mistake that companies make is underestimating the design effort required. It can be tempting to assume that wireless design is a simple matter of putting technology building blocks next to each other. A view that can be reinforced by the component supply industry which has a tendency to see their own component as the key part of the system. The reality is that each different technology element can be in conflict with the needs of the product as a whole: and it requires more dedicated skill and care to resolve "integration issues" than is commonly appreciated.
How does Plextek's expertise help a company get to market faster?
To take a multi-standard wireless device from concept to product launch requires different skills throughout the development. Plextek's expertise is in the breadth of experience of it's engineers across the whole lifecycle. From hardware design, through software integration and into manufacture and factory test. The trick is to make the different radio technologies complementary to each other, rather than competing with each other.
How much time does this typically take?
How long does a typical project take? It depends! If a project based on Plextek's existing Intellectual Property (IP) designs then a product prototype can be ready within 3 months. A development based on novel customer requirements can take around a year.
Can you point to a couple of design projects / product launches you are most proud of?
In development at the moment, we have a portable wireless "infotainment" [information & entertainment] device based on Windows CE which includes wireless data communications, GPS and digital TV. In the past, Plextek has launched custom mobile devices using Windows CE for applications including gaming, PDAs and security.
Finish this sentence "The most exciting thing in the wireless industry today is"
The most exciting thing in the wireless industry today is the increasing capability of pocket sized devices. The on-going challenges of the next few years will be to keep control of size, power consumption and diverse wireless technologies.
Plextek provides electronics product design, supply and consultancy, from the creation of original ideas through to the manufacture of products. We have extensive experience in development of Windows embedded products, drawing on our background Intellectual Property designs in this area. Plextek's skills are in the development of unique, high value wireless products in our specialist business areas which include: telecoms, automotive, security, defence and medical.
