Greetings!
Another Fall
CTIA has come and gone. The general
agreement in the industry was that it was a pretty
dull show, but if you ask most if they would attend
again, it?s a definite YES!
Every now and again I contemplate leaving the crazy
world of wireless and opening up a coffee shop or
bookstore. But if I did, I would probably still
attend the industry shows to keep up with all the
wonderful people I have met over the years ? I
expect many you of feel the same way.
WIP again hosted the CTIA Gathering of the
Mobilists. Photos are up on
Flickr.
About 80 people joined us at the
Cicada
Restaurant in downtown LA to mix and mingle.
Mobilists that attended included: Russell Buckley
and Carlo Longino from MobHappy,
Rafe Blandford from
All about
Symbian, Oliver Starr from Mobile
Crunch, Chetan
Sharma from Aorta, Justin Oberman from MoPocket,
and Michael Mace from Mobile
Opportunity.
The next Gathering will be February in
Barcelona
during 3GSM. If you are interested in sponsoring,
contact Rudy(at)m-trends(dot)org.
October is shaping up to be a busy month - visiting
with developer programs, signing up new members and
staying on top of the industry. I?ll be attending the
following events this month ?
feel free to drop me a line if you would like to meet:
- October 3-5, deCarta?s devcon2006, in San
Francisco. If you are
developing an application in the LBS space,
deCarta?s (they just did a name change from
Telecontar) platform and developer program is a must
for you. And don't miss their European seminar in London October 30.
- October 16-20 in London, I'm attending the
Symbian Smartphone Show
in
London.
- October 23-25 in Cadiz, Spain I'm attending
Orange Partner Camp.
Our newsletter will be published on the 1st of every
month. I think you'll enjoy this one as it is packed
with interesting companies, technologies, opinions
and events.
Best,
Caroline Lewko

Every month, WIP will choose a theme - a
technology, vertical market or a combination of
both. WIP members who reflect that theme will be
featured, (based on key words they have chosen
for their WIPConnector
profile.)
This month we feature ITS, in part due to
the World Congress for ITS in London,
October 8-12, 2006, and also because of the vast
opportunities for our wireless sector. Estimates for
annual market size by 2010 are 18 billion ECU. I
attended the
ITS conference last year and was able to try a
number of different applications soon to be coming
our way including: buses that require no driver, cars
that parallel park for you, in-car collision avoidance
warnings, traffic congestion information based on cell
signal clustering.
Intelligent transportation systems or ITS, encompass
a broad range of wireless and wire-line
communications-based information, control and
electronics technologies. When integrated into the
transportation system infrastructure, and in vehicles
themselves, these technologies help monitor and
manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, provide
alternate routes to travelers, enhance productivity,
and save lives, time and money.
It includes the following technology areas:
- Traveller Information
- Traffic Management
- Public Transport
- Electronic Payment
- Commercial Vehicle Operations
- Emergency Management
- Vehicle Safety and Control Systems
- Information Warehousing

| MEMBER TIPS: What?s your 30 second sell? |
 |
You?ve got to have one ? your 30 second
sell,
elevator pitch, one-sentence stinger. So the story
goes; you meet someone in an elevator, they ask you
what you do and you have 30 seconds to explain it.
No question, it?s tough. But if you only have 30
seconds, it has to count, so it?s worth spending
time to make it great, succinct, memorable and give
your audience that aha moment, ?Aha ? I get what
you
do, tell me more?
The various components of WIP membership have
been
crafted for you to sell the story of your company or
organization ? including the 30 second sell. Every
member during signup submits a short sentence that
explains their company and every member gets
profiled with this sentence on the WIP?s home page
under Featured Member which is showcased in
rotation. Just for fun - visit the WIP homepage
and
click the refresh button and review some member
pitches.
Here are some excellent examples from WIP members
of
their elevator pitch:
- Your UWF and USB Design Centre - Wireless
2000
- Healthcare software applications for the Home
market
- VaaSah
- Lead Generation into EMEA Mobile Operators -
eContact
Services
- Developer, Publisher and Distributor for Smart
Mobile Games - Astraware
Games
- World leaders in mobile barcode solutions - Mobiqa

| PARTNER VIEWPOINT: What is MIMITS? |
 |
|
MIMITS or Mobile IP and Mobility for
ITS is an organization dedicated to enhancing the
proliferation of Mobile IP and Mobile
Networks in Intelligent Transportation
Systems.
One of the fastest growing segments in
Information Technology is Mobile Wireless, and in
particular, Mobile IP. This is expected to be a
top priority due to the growth of wireless
networks and mobile devices and the need for
today's professional to be mobile 24x7 while
connected
to their mode of transportation, be it via air, rail,
road, water.
However, the objective of being Always-On with
seamless high speed connectivity while roaming is a
technical hurdle. Mobile IP allows entire networks and
their subnets
to be mobile and maintain all IP connectivity that is
transparent to the IP hosts connecting through the
network. Wi-Fi and the emerging Wi-Max
communications together with the Mobile IP protocol
can improve safety, security and efficiency during
transit. Travel Time can improved and new platforms
and services will emerge to
provide all of the benefits needed as you travel
away from home.

| EDITORS COMMENTS - Book Review: What happened to the Mobile Web? |
 |
So, what happened to Mobile Web 1.0? For
those who
missed this experience, it felt a bit like how the
first TV viewers saw ?radio with pictures?. Despite
a number of creative attempts to break the model -
of wireless companies pushing a new service to their
captive base - the underwhelming take-up rates for
mobile web reflected a missed target. For many
reasons, good and bad, the creative jungle of the
web that had thrown up blogging, contextual search,
various ?my spaces? and a host of other compelling
user propositions, had failed to transfer to the
mobile arena.
In a new book, Mobile Web 2.0, authors Tony
Fish
and
Ajit Jaoker, assert that ?mobile?
can be a major factor in the changing balance of
power in the converging digital world. They assert
that broadcast content as we know it is losing it?s
appeal, that the walled gardens set up to protect
revenue streams from the free for all (in every
sense) of the web are collapsing. This is
principally being brought about by the impact of
user generated content, captured in context as only
a mobile device can do. Mobile Web 2.0 is focused on
the user as the creator and consumer of content ?at
the point of inspiration? and the mobile device as
the means to harness collective intelligence.
Mobile Web 2.0 (the book) is not about repeating the
hype of Mobile Web 1.0. It is about stimulating
debate and explaining the possible scenarios that
the inevitable change will bring. The underlying
technology is clearly presented, and the concepts
explained creatively. The most heated debate will
probably be around the potential impact the mobile
web may have on the worlds of mobile, media and the
web.
Building on the underlying belief that a mobile
device will bring about significant change to the
communications, media, and web industries as their
business models move from supply-demand into
create-consume, Mobile Web 2.0 re-defines success
factors for executives, VC?s or developers seeking
to take advantage of this shift. To thrive, many
companies must master the art of the ?ring master?
rather than that of the ?director? of their sectors,
skillfully adapting to the performances of a growing
and potentially huge range of performers.
These capabilities are related but very different -
those who seek to create rules without reason to
govern this circus will likely be the losers. Many
of the old rules will still apply ? timing of your
own moves as the critical factor being foremost
amongst them. Some readers may struggle with the
concepts put forward, as many will find it hard to
struggle with innovation outside their own
companies. Nonetheless, the authors have set out a
clear case for change, and that alone should bring
about more informed discussion and a raised
awareness of a rapidly changing industry structure.
Let the mobile web 2.0 debate begin!

THIS MONTH'S FEATURED DEVELOPER PROGRAM - Case Study |
|
|
|
NAVTEQ is a leading provider of
comprehensive
digital map information for automotive navigation
systems, location-based services, and government
and
business solutions.
"Winning the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge
is a
major validation point due to the caliber of the
judges. NAVTEQ has taken that to another level by
creating tremendous visibility for the location
services value chain and, in turn, opening up many
opportunities for the BiM Company.?
Andrew Graham, CEO of Bones in
Motion
NAVTEQ?s approach to the LBS industry has been to
act as a leading catalyst for growth and development
of next-generation LBS applications, providing
developers with high-quality digital maps, expertise
and opportunities to interface with the key
stakeholders in the value chain. From this
philosophy grew new innovative developer-focused
programs such as the
NAVTEQ Developer Conference
which debuted last month at CTIA Wireless I.T. and
Entertainment to a crowd of over 200 attendees and
the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge, now
entering its
4th year.
The NAVTEQ Global
LBS Challenge gives
developers the opportunity to compete for cash and
data licensing prizes for their winning LBS
applications while gaining the invaluable exposure
and credibility needed to bring their products to
the point of commercialization.
The NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge has become a
motivating force for hundreds of LBS application
developers and the excitement and momentum
surrounding the event has never been greater. To
date, 7 past winners and semi-finalists have
launched commercial applications and the number of
registrants for the 2007 LBS Challenge is already up
80% over this same time a year ago.
This case study focuses on Bones in Motion
who ran
away with the 2004- 2005 NAVTEQ Global LBS
Challenge grand prize with their unique fitness
application. Read on to learn how NAVTEQ provided
an environment for a small company to ?crack the
code? of influencing key members of the LBS value
chain.
COMPANY PROFILE
Bones in Motion (BiM), Inc. develops mobile
lifestyle services and has launched its first
offering that targets the outdoor fitness market.
BiM Active turns a mobile phone into a fitness
companion and keeps track of distance, time,
calories, and location for each workout activity and
wirelessly saves the results to a private online
journal for viewing and sharing with others.
Currently deployed on Sprint Nextel, BiM Active will
be available on additional wireless operators in the
near future.
BUSINESS SITUATION
Consumers with a need to track personal fitness
goals and performance progress using mobile phones
wanted visual detail on their routes to use as a
personal navigation/training guide, and to share
with others. At the same time, wireless operators
wanted to better showcase the capabilities of their
handsets and high-speed data networks in support of
a dynamic consumer experience enabled by newly
deployed location technology, e.g., GPS chips
integrated into handsets.
TECHNICAL SITUATION
BiM needed consistent, high-quality, street-level
map data in both Europe and North America. The
company also needed direct technical support that
would allow it to focus on its core handset
application expertise rather than map generation and
manipulation.
SOLUTION
BiM was able to leverage high-quality NAVTEQ® map
data using SOAP/REST/XML Web services offered by a
major geospatial platform provider. This allowed BiM
to maximize use of its resources and avoid incurring
the associated costs of running its own map
servers.
BENEFITS
Working with NAVTEQ has given BiM significant
visibility to and into the LBS ecosystem. BiM has
been impressed by the commitment that NAVTEQ has
shown in promoting LBS into the mainstream,
especially through the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge
for which BiM was the overall winner in 2004?2005.
Having recently launched the Global LBS Challenge
winning solution on Sprint Nextel in February 2006,
BiM has seen incredible media coverage and interest
from key partners, buyers and influencers around
this first product offering. BiM looks forward to
continuing its relationship with NAVTEQ as the
company expands its product across additional
wireless carriers in the United States and
international markets.
TIPS ON COMMERCIALIZING
From BiM?s perspective, it is important to identify
the intersection of consumer interest with enabling
technology availability such as location-enabled
phones within wireless operator planning timeframes.
Also, it is important to focus on developing a
compelling and unique user experience that is a
positive reflection and value creator for all
associated brands. The NAVTEQ Global
LBS Challenge provides a fantastic concept test
bed and can fast track developers? solutions to the
movers and shakers in the LBS ecosystem.
