Greetings!
So when is a start officially a start? When
presenting on 'Successful Start-ups', I often warn of
having an 'escapee' product/service versus a
fully
launched one. Yet it's also important not to sink
into 'tinkerdom'. There is always one more
feature to
implement before you are ready for primetime!
So with that lesson, I'd like to welcome you to the
intro edition (Version 0.5) of THE
CONNECTOR, WIP's
monthly newsletter. The first official newsletter goes
out on September 1 and subsequently the 1st of
every month. We also plan to officially launch WIP
on August 28 with more fanfare, and some activities
around the September CTIA.
I wanted to use this early edition to highlight some
of WIP's goals and activities, but more importantly to
encourage members to get their profiles polished up
before WIP's official start at the end of the month!
The primary goal of WIP is to provide emerging
wireless companies with an extra edge ? to help them
be smarter and win faster. The Profile template in the
WIPConnector Directory was carefully crafted to give
members the opportunity to put their best face
forward in presenting themselves to investors, media,
customers, and potential partners. And yes ? the
WIP mailing list and web visitors already includes all
of those people.
Here are some examples of companies I think have
done an excellent job of completing their
profiles:
- Sysnet - Scotland
- Empowered - Ottawa
- RX Networks - Vancouver
Check out these companies in the directory to see
why they stand out.
Taking a few minutes to complete or update your
profile is well worth the trouble.
Till next time,
Best, Caroline
| WIP PARTNER NEWS: Announcing our first Industry Trade Association Partners |
 |
|
Industry Trade Associations are a key
element
in supporting and growing our industry and we are
delighted to announce WIP's
three Founding Trade Association Partners, who
together represent almost 700 wireless
companies:
Trade Association Partners are listed on the
Partner
Page on the WIP Website, and each month we
will
feature a member company from each
partner
association.
Be sure to contact the Trade Association Partners
for their views and opinions on our sector, their
extensive knowledge of their regions and for
information on their member companies.
"You soon learn in business that connections
and networking are an essential part of success, and
all the more so for small and medium sized
businesses,? said Neil Knudsen, Chair of Ottawa
Wireless Cluster. ?WIP has all the elements to play
a big part in any networking plan, allowing you to
more easily extend your reach nationally and
globally. That's why I'm a big supporter and early
participant in it."
The WIP Partner page also features a listing of
other
trade associations that we hope to soon
announce
as partners.

| EVENTS: WIP Sponsored Reception at CTIA |
 |
|
Following the success of the Mobilist Reception at
CTIA
in April, WIP and Gramercy
Ventures are again
teaming up to host a reception for the Mobilists at
CTIA in September. (If you missed the party in Las
Vegas in April, photos are available on
Flickr.)
The Mobilists are a talented group of writers
with
their own blogs covering all things Mobile,
including my good friend Oliver Starr who did
such a
nice job of writing about WIP in his July 29th
article at MobileCrunch.
You can find out what the Mobilists are writing
about each week at Carnival of the
Mobilists.
WIP members who are attending CTIA will be sent an
exclusive invitation to the reception in the next
few weeks. To get your invitation to the event:
- Become a member of WIP.
- Fill out your complete Profile in the
WIPConnector Directory. Specifically, be sure to
fill out the information on Page 3 (Additional
Information), and under General Information
indicate
you are attending CTIA Fall.
- RSVP to your invitation when it arrives.
See you there!

MEMBER TIPS - Optimizing Your Profile in the WIPConnector Directory |
|
|
|
The WIPConnector Directory is a unique
resource and tool for the Wireless Industry. It
provides a visual 'pinpoint' view of companies,
their
technologies and markets, enhanced with a powerful
search tool. You have to spend a bit of time inside
to really appreciate the value.
Here are
some tips for
members and those searching:
Where's
My Profile? You signed up for membership
but you don't see your
profile when you log into the WIPConnector
Directory. You must
choose key words in all four areas of Edit
Profile, Page 2 ?
Indicate Technologies, Market, Value Chain and
Transmission
Find out who else is attending CTIA Perform
a Filter Search (Left Hand Column,
2nd page). Narrow down your search even more by
selecting Key Words to find a match to technologies
and vertical markets!
Featured Member on Home Page All
members of WIP are featured in rotation on the
Home Page. Be sure to revisit the One Sentence
Description of
your company that you filled out during the
membership process. You can modify at any time by
logging into: Membership Change
