GreeneLeaf Jazz and The Spoken Word
The Michael Blake Trio & Writer/Poet Bushra Rehman
Thursday, July 14, 2011
6pm- 8pm
Meet at the Grove
This Thursday join us for an incredible performance by Michael Blake and Bushra Rehman. Saxophonist/composer Michael Blake has managed to embrace jazz history while challenging it head on. Though his presence as a jazz artist has earned him accolades in countless jazz publications -including jazz artist of the year in Downbeat's Rising Star category - he honed his skills in John Lurie's iconic downtown band the Lounge Lizards. His first album was produced by the legendary Teo Macero and hailed as a masterpiece. He has since produced another 10 CDs as a leader. Michael is based in Brooklyn but also keeps a foot in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada where he records for Songlines Records. He has written for TV and film and can be heard on the popular kids show theme 'The Backyardigans'. Michael's recent TV appearances include Saturday Night Live and Conan O'Brien with Ray Lamontagne. Currently, Michael is performing with his trio, bassist Ben Allison and flautist Nicole Mitchell. Bushra Rehman was a vagabond who traveled for years with nothing more than a greyhound bus ticket and a book bag full of poems. With both humor and sincerity, she tells the stories of her immigrant upringing- the aunties, bodegas, stray dogs and street life of children. She was also widely praised for editing a collection of essays entitled Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today's Feminism and has been featured in the New York Times, BBC Radio, and The Brian Lehrer Show. Currently, she is a teaching artist for Teachers & Writers Collaborative, Urban Word NYC, and the Asian American Writers' Workshop. |
