From ADRIFT:Charting Our Course Back to a Great Nationby William C. Harris and Steven C. Beschloss
"Is there a link between taxes and patriotism? From a contemporary perspective, it's hard to imagine the intensity of civic activism that defined the World War II home front as American soldiers battled overseas. There was a war to win, a common enemy to battle, a time for sacrifice and shared adversity. That included paying taxes, just as it did in every other time in the nation's history. Just before the war broke out in 1939, the top tax rate was 70%. By 1942 it was raised to 88 %, then raised again in the last years of the war, hitting an extraordinary level of 94%. Since there was a war to win, everyone would have to do their part, including the country's wealthiest. Throughout the 1950s until 1963, a period that included the launching of Sputnik and America's mission to the moon, that top income bracket was still taxed at 91% and stayed at 70% or above until Ronald Reagan became president.
With the rise of distrust and frustration toward government, the consistent antigovernment drumbeat since the 1980s, the shift from citizens to consumers, and the decline of civic engagement and political participation, it may seem inevitable that our political leaders would fail to expect or demand Americans to make sacrifices for the good of the country.
In 2008, as the country careered toward its worst recession since the Great Depression and embroiled in two major military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan over oil, the president chose not to ask Americans to sacrifice by raising taxes. All during that time, and still today, the country's top tax bracket hovered at 35%, down from the 39.1% rate when President Bush took office. "

From Hiroshima to Hope
Saturday August 6 is the 66th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
As we do every year, we've been working with a coalition of other groups to create From Hiroshima to Hope, the largest commemoration of the opening of the era of nuclear war outside of Japan.
This year's event will include some old favorites:
· Drumming by Seattle Kokon Taiko,
· Shakuhachi flute playing by Peter Hill
· Marcia Takamura on Koto.
· New voices will be:
· Trevor Tate, President of the United Nations Association-Seattle
· Native youth from Red Eagle Soaring Theater performing "The Right to Justice".
And, of course, a thousand lanterns floating on Seattle's Green Lake.
6 pm Gathering & Lantern preparation
7 pm Program
9 pm Lantern floating.
The location, as always, is on the NW shore of Green Lake, just south of the Bathhouse theater.
If you have time to volunteer, we need help all day, with setting things up, running the event, and cleanup afterwords. Email fhthvolunteers@gmail.com or call me.
